HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #2388

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/07/99 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/08/99

Daily Status Report as of 159/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Five Sets of STIS/CCD/MA1 7315 (A Campaign to Determine
the CO and CO2 Abundances in Cometary Nuclei)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to
make observations of the Comet Lee to determine the CO and CO2 abundances
in the cometary nuclei. This campaign began in Cycle 6, using the FOS to
obtain spectra of comets 22P/Kopff and C/1996 B2 {Hyakutake}, the latter in
June 1996 when the comet was 0.94 AU from the sun and 1.12 AU from Earth.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 7620 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Standard Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Cycle 7 standard dark
calibration images. This dark calibration program obtains dark frames
every week in order to provide data for the ongoing calibration of the CCD
dark current rate, and to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot
pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 8081 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make a
dark and a bias calibration observation. The effectiveness of the CCD hot
pixel annealing process is assessed by measuring the dark current behavior
before and after annealing and by searching for any window contamination
effects. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7949 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor --
Cont. to June 99)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct a
CCD dark calibration and a bias monitoring program. It was also scheduled
to track the growth of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the
various target acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental
Darks PT1/3)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images.
This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day
to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot
pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.6 Completed STIS/CCD/WF/PC-2 7388 (Black Holes and the Centers of
Galaxies)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) and the WF/PC-2 were
used to continue our survey of the center of the nearby galaxy NGC-4649.
The major goal is to survey an unbiased set of galaxies with a potentially
wide range of black hole masses. The sample has been carefully chosen to
optimize leverage on the character of a proposed correlation of black hole
mass with galaxy mass. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The
observations were completed as scheduled with no anomalies.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 8090 (POMS Test Proposal: WF-II Parallel Archive
Proposal Continuation)

The WF/PC-2 was used in the parallel mode to make some low galactic
latitude archive observations. The program will be used to take parallel
images of random areas of the sky. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 8269 (The Morphological Evolution of Field Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the near-infrared field
galaxy SA57-B in order to study its morphology. The observations were
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.9 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 8406 (POMS Test Proposal: STIS
Non-Scripted Parallel Proposal Continuation V)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make high
galactic latitude observations taken in parallel with the prime science
observations as part of a POMS proposal. This is a STIS non-scripted
parallel Condition V proposal. As described in HSTAR 7160 and 2.1, the
acquisition for the second iteration of this proposal failed and the take
data flag remained down, affecting one observation. Otherwise, the
observations were completed as scheduled, and no further anomalies were
reported.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6833 (A Cepheid Search in the Virgo Cluster
Galaxy NGC 4571)

The WF/PC-2 was to be used to make observations of the Virgo Cluster
galaxy NGC-4571 in order to search for Cepheid variable stars. As
described in HSTAR 7160 and 2.1, the acquisition for this proposal failed
and the take data flag remained down, affecting one observation.

1.11 Completed Two sets of STIS/MA1/MA2 7950 (Cycle 7 MAMA Dark
Measurements)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1 and MA2) was used to
make a set of dark calibration images. This is to establish if the
detectors are performing nominally, that no internal movement of the MCP
has taken place, and establish dark level in orbit for a given operating
temperature. These darks will be used in later image reduction and also
trended over instrument life time as indicators of detector degradation or
damage. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 13
Successful : 12

The acquisition scheduled for 158/1705Z failed to RGA control when
the FGS-1 search radius limit was exceeded. It is believed that the
attitude was good at the time. HSTAR 7160 was written. The proposals
described in 1.9 and 1.10 were affected.

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 4
Successful : 4

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 27
Successful : 27

2.3 Operations Notes:

Using ROP SRT-1, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared four times.

Per an operations request, the NICMOS FPA temperature sensor
fordetector 3 was enabled at 159/1142Z.

Due to GSFC Internal Simulation #5 (Rendezvous/Capture), HST
operations transferred to the CCS "A" string at 158/1310Z, then moved to
the SAMS back-up facility at 159/0030Z. Subsequently, operations was
transferred to the PRS ground system at 159/0805Z when no telemetry could
be received from the FEP on the CCS string.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations.
