1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 7621 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Supplemental Darks PT1/3)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make supplemental dark calibration images.
This set of calibrations is intended to obtain three dark frames every day
to provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot
pixels. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 7659 (Daily Darks to Update Acquisition Bad Pixel
Table)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make dark
calibration images in order to update the acquisition bad pixel table.
Daily hot pixel lists can also be used for science data analysis. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 7792 (HST Support for Mars Global Surveyor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make imaging observations of the planet Mars
in support of the Mars Global Surveyor Mission during the aero-braking by
monitoring dust opacity on the planet's atmosphere. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Four Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7794 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark
Characterization of Pedestal B)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras 1, 2 and 3) was used to make to
make MULTIACCUM dark characterization calibration observations using
Pedestal B. The purpose of this proposal is to obtain on-orbit darks for
the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, after day 233 of
1997. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 7783 (STIS Parallel Science)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
observations taken in parallel with the prime science. The observations
were completed, and no problems were reported.

1.6 Completed Two sets of NIC/2 7330 (The Fueling of Active Nucleii: A
NICMOS Snapshot Survey)

The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Two) was used to probe the dark
matter distribution of NGC-6412 far from the center by observing
intervening absorption from the MgII doublet (lambda 2800) in the spectrum
of one background QSO located in a geometrically optimal position. HST
observations are required because this feature is in a wavelength range not
accessible from the ground, and the QSO magnitudes and expected strength of
absorption make IUE observations unfeasible.

A Guide Star acquisition failed due to search radius limit exceeded (SRLE)
at 282/1520Z following two consecutive failed mode updates. No roll delay
update prior to the slew with a roll error of about 25 arcseconds. HSTAR
6190 was written. See Section 2.1. No other anomalies were reported.

1.7 Completed Three Sets of STIS/CCD 7601 (CCD Dark and Bias Monitor)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to conduct
bias and dark monitoring. Also, observations were made to track the growth
of hot pixels on the CCD in general and within the various target
acquisition apertures specifically. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.8 Completed NIC/1 7255 (NICMOS Observations of JVAS/CLASS
Gravitational Lenses)

The Near Infrared Camera (Camera #1) was used to make observations
of the JVAS class, gravitational lens, quasi-stellar source QSO-1934+5.
The JVAS/CLASS radio survey has been the most successful to date at finding
arcsecond-scale gravitational lenses, almost doubling the known number (11
lenses found of which 10 are new discoveries). The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology With the Medium Deep
Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the
prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Sky Survey. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.10 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7782 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel
Archive Proposal - Half Orbit)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used for a
non-scripted parallel archive proposal (one-half orbit). The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed STIS/MA1 7669 (Incidence Angle Correction for
Non-Concentric Slits-MAMA)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make
calibration images needed to find the incidence angle correction for
non-concentric slits-MAMA. This test will provide incidence angle
corrections for MAMA observations using non-concentric slits. This tests
fills in missing calibrations from ground testing. The observations were
completed as planned and no anomalies were reported.

1.12 Completed Two Sets of STIS/CCD 7635 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to test the
hot pixel annealing procedure. The effectiveness of the CCD hot pixel
annealing process is assessed by measuring the dark current behavior before
and after annealing and by searching for any window contamination effects.
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.13 Completed NIC/1/2 7365 (Unscrambling the Near-Infrared Properties
of Young Planetary Nebulae)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One and Two) was used to make
observations of the young planetary nebula NGC-7027. Objects of this class
display a number of enigmatic features that have prevented a full
understanding of post-asymptotic giant branch stellar evolution. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.14 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 7786 (Pure Parallel Archive Survey -
Continuation)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations as part of an archival
survey program in which the images were taken in parallel with the prime
science observations. These WF/PC-2 parallel observations were obtained in
the ultraviolet in a search for interesting objects. The observations were
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.15 Completed STIS/MA1 7434 (The Supernova Intensive Study)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to continue
the long-term project on supernovae by observing SN1987A. HST can make
unique contributions to understanding supernovae, as has been demonstrated
through this program in past years, and now STIS and NICMOS offer new
opportunities for deepening this investigation. The aim of the proposal is
to explore the UV emission from supernovae, exploit the spatial resolution
of HST and press the late-time observations of supernovae into uncharted
territory.

The Fixed Head Star Tracker (FHST) update succeeded, the following Guide
Star acquisition failed at 282/1619Z. The Attitude was recovered by ARU/PRT
at 1743Z. HSTAR 6190 was written. See Section 2.1. No other anomalies were
noted.

1.16 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7268 (Nuclear Brightness Profiles of Merger
Remnants; Do Mergers Form Ellipticals?)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras 1, 2 and 3) was used to make
observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC-7585. Many elliptical galaxies
might have formed from mergers of disk galaxies. Numerical simulations
yield elliptical-like remnants and observed merger remnants have R^1/4
surface brightness profiles. However, while the global properties of
merger remnants and ellipticals are similar, it is unknown whether this is
true for their nuclear properties as well. The observations were executed
as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 7625 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 7 Earth Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of Earth flat calibration
images. These flat fields will allow mapping of the OTA illumination
pattern and will be used in conjunction with previous internal and external
flats to generate new pipeline superflats. The observations were completed
as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.18 Completed NIC/1 7795 (NICMOS MULTIACCUM Dark Characterization 1/8)

The Near Infrared Camera (Camera 1) was used to obtain on-orbit
darks for the MULTIACCUM predefined sequences requested by GOs, after day
233 of 1997. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.19 Completed FGS 6538 (The Distances to Dwarf Novae, and the
Calibration of the Technique of Infrared Spectroscopic Parallax)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the Dwarf
Novae U-Gem and several other reference stars in order to measure its
distance from its parallax. The distances to this dwarf novae is poorly
known. This deficiency severely impacts our ability to quantify the
energetics of the various processes taking place in dwarf novae systems.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.20 Completed STIS/CCD 7781 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel Archive
Proposal - Full Orbit)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used for a
non-scripted parallel archive proposal (one full orbit). The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.21 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7729 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two, and Three) was used to
obtain "JHK" imaging of sky regions while another instrument was prime.
These observations were part of the short NICMOS one-orbit parallel
program. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.
