HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #1810

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/05/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/06/97

Daily Status Report as of 037/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio =
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue =
continuum in radio galaxy 3C15.0. Combined with existing data, these =
exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color =
distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the =
optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.2 Completed FOS/RD 6592 (The Distribution and Evolution of =
Lyman-Alpha Forest Cloud Sizes)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
observations of quasi-stellar source Q0107-025B in order to study the =
distribution and evolution of the foreground Lyman-Alpha Clouds. =
Together with ground-based observations, these data will help study the =
evolution of the cloud's radii with redshift, with the characteristic =
size of the Lyman-Alpha absorbers decreasing with increasing redshift. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. =

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 7202 (The WF/PC-2 B Band Parallel Survey: A =
Systematic and Synoptic Study of Galaxy Formation and Evolution - Short =
Orbit Case)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations as part of a B-Band =
Survey to make synoptic study of galaxy formation and evolution. These =
observations were taken in parallel with the prime science observations. =
They were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor-Visual Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat =
images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's =
operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat =
fields, which will be executed twice per month. At 036/1219Z, about =
one-half hour before the end of this proposal, the scheduled FHST update =
was not successful. Otherwise, the observations completed as planned, =
and no effect on science was reported.

1.5 Completed GHRS/2 6210 (GHRS Spatial PSF Characterization - Cycle =
5)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make =
observations of standard star HD106343 as part of a Cycle 5 spatial point =
spread function characterization using the small science aperture. This =
is to study and evaluate the scattering of light contributed by objects =
within 3 arcseconds of the GHRS's aperture. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6902 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Photometric Calibration =
Monitor UV/OPT STD)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make both ultraviolet and optical =
photometric observations of the standard star GRW+70D582 as part of a =
Cycle 6 calibration procedure. This observations was done immediately =
before and after decontamination procedures. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6419 (Testing Unified Models With a Complete =
Sample of Seyfert Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Seyfert galaxies =
Mark620 and NGC3081 to help build a complete survey of the Seyfert class =
of galaxies. This will help test the current model for Seyfert class =
galaxies. This model proposes that all Seyferts have a Seyfert-1 =
nucleus, which is surrounded by a torus of gas and dust. The =
observations were completed as planned and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6909 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Earth Flats

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright Earth to =
obtain streak flats which are used to construct high quality flat fields =
for the WF/PC-2 filter set. The observations were executed as scheduled, =
and no anomalies were noted.
