HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #1892

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/04/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/05/97

Daily Status Report as of 156/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6358 (UV Imaging of Circumnuclear Starburst Rings)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet snapshot observations of
galaxy NGC-5427 in order to study its circumnuclear starburst rings. A
homogeneous database of properties of the star-forming region will be
generated. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.2 Completed STIS/MA1 7086 (STIS22MB STIS Slit to Detector Internal
Stability - MAMA - Part 2)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (MA1) was used to make slit to
detector internal stability calibration observations. This was to
determine the stability of the spectrograph to thermal variations in the
MAMA modes. A dark calibration image was also taken. The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6793 (WF/PC-2 Support for the Mars Pathfinder Mission)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Mars. This
is to support the Pathfinder Mission to Mars. Observations of Mars are
scheduled near opposition, one month prior to landing, and during the
landed phase of the Pathfinder Mission. The observations were completed as
scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 7588 (Measuring Q0 With Type IA Supernovae)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of supernova SN1997A1
in order to measure the Q0 parameter. This is to produce a precise Hubble
diagram which can be used to measure the cosmic deceleration and global
curvature of the universe. HST can make an essential contribution by
providing photometry with substantially higher precision and better
temporal coverage than can be obtained from the ground. The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed Five Sets of NIC/3 7611 (NICMOS Parallel Thermal
Background Test)

The Near Infrared Camera (Camera Three) was used to make
observations of an object designated a Target-1 in order to conduct a
parallel thermal background test. This test was conducted in order to
measurement of the stability of the HST thermal emission. The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed Six Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7701 (NICMOS Short One Orbit Parallel)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used as
part of a short NICMOS one orbit parallel program, to obtain "JHK" imaging
of sky regions when another instruments prime. As reported in yesterday's
report, the FHST update at the beginning of this proposal failed, but t he
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6102 (Chemical Evolution and History of Star
Formation in the Large Magallanic Cloud)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of NGC-5139, the "Bar"
region in the Large Magellanic cloud to study the chemical evolution and
the history of star formation in that region. The goal is to observe
individual field stars near the main sequence turnoff in order to study the
large scale process that control star formation and nucleosynthesis in
galaxies. The observations were executed as planned, and no anomalies were
reported.

1.8 Completed Eight Sets of STIS/CCD 7675 (STIS Non-Scripted Parallel
Archive Proposal)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used in the
parallel mode to obtain slitless spectroscopy with the G750L grism to
search for emission line galaxies at intermediate to high redshift. The
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.9 Completed Eight Sets of NIC/1/2/3 7676 (NICMOS-One Orbit Parallel)

The Near Infrared Camera (Cameras One, Two and Three) was used to
conduct an on-orbit calibration procedure. This was none in parallel with
the prime science observations. The procedure was completed as scheduled,
and no anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed STIS/CCD 7063 (STIS SMOV CCD Contamination Monitor)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make
observations of standard star GD153 in order to measure flux and look for
any gross changes over time that might indicate contamination. The
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.11 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6802 (Cosmology With the Medium
Deep Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the
prime science observations as part of the Medium Deep Sky Survey. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6797 (The Very-Low-Mass Star Content of the
Globular Cluster NGC-6397)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the globular cluster
NGC-6397 in order to study its very low mass star content. This proposal
is to take second-epoch images for determination of proper motions of
individual faint stars. The observations were completed as planned, and no
anomalies were reported.
