HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #1859

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 04/17/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/18/97

Daily Status Report as of 108/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed STIS/CCD 7107 (STIS CCD Hot Pixel Annealing)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was run though an =
annealing process. A bias and a dark calibration image were also taken. =
The effectiveness of the CCD hot pixel annealing process is assessed by =
measuring the dark current behavior before and after annealing, and by =
searching for any window contamination effects. In addition CTE =
performances are examined by looking for traps in a low signal level =
flat. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of =
X-Ray Selected AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the =
known, low, red-shifted, x-ray active galactic nuclei (AGN) MS842.7-0 and =
MS0444.9-1. These data will allow a study of the optical properties of =
an unbiased sample of AGN host galaxies. The observations were completed =
as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the =
Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the =
ultraluminous IRAS galaxies CL-ULIR15 and QDOTULIR15. These data will be =
searched for multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for =
starburst regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 7124 (Kinematics of the Nuclear Gas Disk in the =
Galaxy M84)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make =
observations of the galaxy M-83 (NGC-4374) in order to study the =
kinematics of its nuclear disk. This is to detect a super massive black =
hole in its active galactic nuclei. A wavelength calibration =
observations was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, =
and no anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed STIS/CCD 7063 (STIS SMOV CCD Contamination Monitor)

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make =
observations of standard star GD153 in order to measure flux and look =
for any gross changes over time that might indicate contamination. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. =

1.6 Completed NIC/1/2/3 7039 (NICMOS to FGS Astrometric Calibration - =
Aperture Locations)

The NIC 1/2/3 were used to make astrometric observations of the =
cluster NGC-188 in order to determine the various aperture locations. =
The position of NICMOS apertures in the HST focal plane was measured to =
an accuracy of +/- 2 arcsec in the V2-V3 plane. The test was repeated =
three times to monitor the temporal evolution of the aperture locations =
as function of focus position. The observations were executed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5923 (The Structure of the Emission Line Regions =
of Compact Steep Spectrum)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the compact radio =
galaxy 3C454.1 in order to study the structure of the emission line =
regions of its compact steep spectrum. The goal is to map the emission =
line structure and establish its relationship to the radio structure. =
The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
reported.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6741 (Synoptic Monitoring of Seasonal Phenomena =
on Mars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Mars as =
part of a program of synoptic monitoring of the planet's seasonal =
phenomena. This is an especially important period because Mars =
Pathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor will be in cruise phase during this =
time. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
reported.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6601 (Evolution of Binary Neutron Stars and =
Their White Dwarf Companions: Part 2)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the binary star =
STAR-0621 which is known to have a neutron star with a white dwarf =
companion. It is also a millisecond rate pulsar. This is part of an =
on-going program in which it is intended to enlarge the sample of known =
white dwarf companions as new millisecond pulsars are discovered. The =
guide star acquisition for this proposal (at 107/2328Z) failed to fine =
lock on FGS #3 only. Otherwise, the observations were executed as =
scheduled, with no further anomalies.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 8
Successful : 7

As detailed in 1.9, one acquisition failed to fine lock on one =
FGS. HSTAR 6033 was written.

Successful : 17

2.3 Operations Notes:
