DAILY REPORT #1858

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 04/16/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/17/97

Daily Status Report as of 107/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed NIC/2/3 7053 (NICMOS Limb Avoidance Determination)

The Near Infrared Cameras (Cameras Two and Three) were used to =
make limb avoidance determination observations. The purpose of this test =
is to determine the appropriate bright and dark Earth limb avoidance =
angles for NICMOS science observations. Angles for both routine and =
low-background observations were be determined. The observations were =
executed as schedule, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed STIS/CCD 7068 (STIS CCD Diffuse Source Acquisition (STIS =
11))

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make =
image of the defuse object NGC-1399. This is to demonstrate the ability =
of the STIS flight software to locate the brightest region in a diffuse =
or extended source within an acquisition aperture, determine the position =
of a spectroscopic slit, and position the target within the slit. Just =
before this proposal was due to execute, SSR SA2 engineering data wrapped =
around. This necessitated the use of ESTR #2 for engineering data =
recording. Because of a rush in commanding due to an impending ZOE, a =
wrong argument was used in a PSTOL procedure which sets parameters for =
the TRI module. As a result, a series of science accumulations, =
acquisitions, and mech moves which occurred between 106/0219Z and =
106/0258Z were irretrievably lost. HSTAR 6029 was wriiten. Otherwise, =
the observations in this three-and-a-half hour proposal were executed as =
scheduled, and no further anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the =
Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the =
ultraluminous IRAS galaxies QDOTULIR05 and IR14348-14. These data will =
be searched for multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and =
for starburst regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and =
no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed STIS/CCD 7092 (CCD Dark Rate and Read Noise)

Observations were taken to measure CCD dark current and gather =
data for making super darks. The observations were completed as planned, =
and no anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed FGS 6538 (The Distances to Dwarf Novae, and the =
Calibration of the Technique of Infrared Spectroscopic Parallax)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the Dwarf =
Novae U-Gem and several other reference stars in order to measure its =
distance from its parallax. The distances to this dwarf novae are poorly =
known. This deficiency severely impacts our ability to quantify the =
energetics of the various processes taking place in dwarf novae systems. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. =

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6809 (An Optical Counterpart to the X-Ray Point =
Source in the Puppis A Supernova Remnant?)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the STAR-08215 in =
order to search for an optical counterpart to the point x-ray source =
which is located in the Puppis A Super Nova Remnant. All the data are =
consistent with the source being a hot neutron star formed at the time of =
the supernova which produced Puppis A, some 4000 years ago. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported. =

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 7590 (Cosmological Parameters Omega and Lambda =
>From High-Redshift Type IA Supernovae)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of type 1A supernova =
SN9784 in order to study its redshift, making direct measurements of the =
cosmological parameters Omega, Lambda, and curvature (Omega_k) using Type =
1A supernovae (SNe 1a) as a calibrated "standard candle". The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6685 (Globular Cluster Systems Along the Hubble =
Sequence)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the globular cluster =
NGC-45665 in order to study the globular cluster systems along the Hubble =
sequence. This proposal is studying six globular cluster systems which =
are located in edge-on galaxies beyond the local group. The observations =
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed Two Sets of FGS 6566 (Calibrating the Mass-Luminosity =
Relation at the End of the Main Sequence)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the componen=
ts of the low-mass, binary system stars GL748 and GL234 in order to make =
a calibrations of the mass-luminosity relation at the end of the main =
sequence. The individual stars have masses of less than 0.2 solar =
masses. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems =
were noted.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6822 (Ionized Gas With Broad Emission Lines in =
the Nuclei of Ellipticals)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the large elliptical =
galaxy NGC-2974 in order to study the broad emission lines in the =
nucleus. Ionized gas disks in the central regions of elliptical galaxies =
have proven to be a powerful tool for the determination of the true =
spatial shape and the central mass-to-light ratio of their host galaxies. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.
