DAILY REPORT #1851

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 04/07/97 - 0000Z (UTC) 04/08/97

Daily Status Report as of 098/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6361 (High Resolution Imaging of X-Ray Selected =
AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of the =
known, low, red-shifted, x-ray active, galactic nuclei (AGN) MS1334.6+0, =
MS0841.7+1, MS1416.3-1 and MS1114.4+1. These data will allow a study of =
the optical properties of an unbiased sample of AGN host galaxies. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: =
Internal Monitor-Visual Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat =
images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's =
operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat =
fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.3 Completed STIS/CCD 7076 (STIS Corrector Alignment, Fine)

The Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (CCD) was used to make =
observations of GD153 as part of a fine correction alignment and =
calibration procedure. This is to refine the STIS corrector system in =
alignment so that the image quality at the spectrographs slit plane is =
optimized. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 7592 (Follow-Up Observations of a Possible =
Optical Counterpart of GRB 970228)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations to look for an optical =
counterpart to Gamma Ray Burster GRB970228. The immediate goals of the =
observations are: (i) to constrain the magnitude of the variable object =
to the deepest possible flux levels that can be reached in a reasonable =
exposure time, and (ii) to obtain the best morphological information on =
the 'companion'. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host Galaxies of =
BL-Lac Objects)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of =
BL-Lac object S5-1803-78 in order to study its environment and its host =
galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy =
type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the =
Ultraluminous IRAS Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the =
ultraluminous IRAS galaxies NGWULIR141 and NGWULIR133. These data will =
be searched for multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and =
for starburst regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and =
no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of S/C 7030 (Guide Star Acquisition =
Verification For New FGS-1R OR FGS-2R)

This proposal was used to verify the acquisition and tracking =
performance of the new FGS when it is in the pointing control loop. The =
proposal consists of four guide star acquisitions and fine lock tracking =
using the new FGS as a guider. The observations were completed as =
planned, and no problems were reported.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 7016 (WF/PC-2 SM97 UV Monitor And Cool Down =
Procedure)

This operation was used as a post-SM97 cooldown of the WF/PC-2 CCD =
to -88C with frequent monitoring of contamination via standard star =
GRW+70D582 observations in filter F170W. An internal flat and a dark =
calibration image were also taken. The observations were completed as =
planed, and no problems were reported

1.9 Completed STIS/CCD 7092 (CCD Dark Rate and Read Noise)

Observations were taken to measure CCD dark current and gather =
data for making super darks. The observations were completed as planned, =
and no anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 6904 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: =
Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series of several dark calibration =
images as part of a standard calibration within Cycle 6. This =
calibration procedure is performed once per week as part of an on going =
CCD calibration to be used to monitor and characterize hot pixels. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6360 (A Snapshot Survey of "Radio Loud" IRAS =
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the =
radio loud IRAS galaxy GAL-0413-1, discerning high surface brightness =
structures in its post-starburst active nuclear regions. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Snapshots)

The WF/PC-2 was used to survey VCC1298, from a sample of 30 dwarf =
elliptical galaxies. As mentioned in 2.1, the acquisition for this =
proposal failed and the take data flag remained down. No further anomalie=
s were reported.

1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges of Spiral =
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of =
spiral galaxy NGC-2196 in order to study its central bulges. The aim is =
to investigate the core properties, correlations with global galactic =
properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or =
miscentered nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.14 Completed NIC/2 7115 (The Egg Nebula)

The Near Infrared Camera #2 was used to make observations of the =
Egg Nebula (aka, CRL 2688). CRL 2688 is a bipolar reflection nebula =
surrounding a post-asymptotic giant branch star and is in transition to =
becoming a planetary nebula. The observations were completed as planned, =
and no problems were reported.
