DAILY REPORT #1776

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 12/10/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 12/11/96

Daily Status Report as of 346/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.

1.2 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot search for High Redshift QSOs With =
Far-UV Flux)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of =
the quasi-stellar object Q2204-573. This is to determine if this high =
redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed FOS/RD 6300 (The Nature of the Central UV Source in =
M-31)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the central 0.5 arcsecond =
region of galaxy M-31 (aka, NGC-224). The small aperture will be used to =
map the stellar velocity dispersion and rotation within this grad shaped =
area. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.4 Completed FOS/BL/GHRS/1 6795 (Sleuthing the Dynamo: The Final =
Frontier)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) and the High Resolution =
Spectrograph (Side One) both were used to make ultraviolet observations =
of late-type STAR-0326. This is to study the nature of its magnetic =
activity, which is thought to be the link between the hydro-magnetic =
dynamo deep inside the star and the violent state of its outer most =
coronal layers. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
problems were reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio =
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue =
continuum in radio galaxy 3C468.1. Combined with existing data, these =
exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color =
distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the =
optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.6 Completed GHRS/2 6899 (GHRS Cycle 6 Echelle Wavelength Monitor)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to execute a =
wavelength calibration observation of its Echelle spectrograph using an =
internal standard lamp. The observations were executed as scheduled, and =
no anomalies were noted.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 3
Successful : 3

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 11
Successful : 11

The primary acquisition, with immediate re-acquisition, at =
346/030439Z obtained fine lock backup on FGS2 only. HSTAR 5837 was =
written.

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 6
Successful : 6

2.3 Operations Notes:

DF-224 flight software versions 9.7.2 and 9.7.4 are scheduled to =
be uplinked this afternoon. The new software makes acquisition logic =
enhancements and allows for faster recovery from PSEA during SM2.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Nothing at this time.
