Daily Status Report as of 071/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FOC/96 6846 (Observations of Neptune and Pluto for the =
"Live From HST" Television)

The Faint Object Camera was used to make observations of the planet =
Neptune. This object was selected by students involved in the Passport to =
Knowledge program. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6363 (The Environments and Host =
Galaxies of BL-Lac Objects)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of BL-Lac =
objects MS0419.3+1 and IES1248-29 in order to study their environment and =
their host galaxies. The goal is to investigate systematic trends in the =
host galaxy type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion =
galaxies, etc. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed FGS 6049 (Monitoring the Size and Shape of Mira Type =
Stars)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the Mira =
class star HD120285 in order to study its size and shape during different =
phases of its pulsation cycle. The observations were completed as =
planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5946 (The Stellar Populations of Low =
Surface Brightness Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low surface =
brightness galaxies Malin1, V1L4 and V7L3. The objective of this program =
is to study the stellar population and evolution of these galaxies. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6189 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor - Vis Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal visual flat calibration =
images. Both photometric and narrow-band filters were used. The =
observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS =
Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the =
ultraluminous IRAS galaxy IR14348-14. These data will be searched for =
multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst =
regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance =
Scale)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-2090 =
looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of this =
observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of =
10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5923 (The Structure of the Emission Line Regions =
of Compact Steep Spectrum)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the compact radio =
galaxy 4C12.50 in order to study the structure of the emission line =
regions of its compact steep spectrum. The goal is to map the emission =
line structure and establish its relationship to the radio structure. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed FOS/RD 6039 (The Young , Rapidly-Evolving Planetary =
Nebula HE3-1357)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
spectrographic observations of the young, rapidly evolving planetary =
nebula HE3-1357 (Sector O). It appears that this planetary nebula is no =
older than 40 years. The evolution of this object should allow a strict =
test of the models and theories for the early evolution of planetary =
nebulae. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.11 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6183 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: =
Decon)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make some internal flat, K-Spot, and dark =
calibration images. The purpose is to define decontamination procedures =
to be run during Cycle 5. The calibration observations were completed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6507 (NGC-3664 A Case Study of Shock Induced =
Propagation of Star Formation)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-3664 in =
order to study shock induced propagation of star formation. =
Multi-wavelength ground based observations indicate that star formation =
preferentially occurs along the rim and at the edges of the giant gas =
shells of this irregular galaxy. The observations were executed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.13 Completed GHRS/1 5413 (The Local ISM Flow Within the Heliosphere)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations to =
study the flow of neutral atoms in the interstellar medium by observing =
diffuse sky background in Lyman Alpha. The observations were executed as =
scheduled, and no problems were noted.

1.14 Completed GHRS/1 6323 (Weak Interstellar Lines in the Spectrum of =
Zeta Oph)

The High Resolution spectrograph (Side One) was used to make =
observations of the star Zeta Orp (aka, HD149757) in order to study weak =
interstellar lines in its spectrum. These exposures are designed to =
detect the weak absorption lines produced by molecules, heavy elements and =
high ionizations. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.15 Completed FGS 6269 (Parallax of TV COL)

The FGSs were used to measure the parallax of variable X-Ray star =
TV COL. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.

1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 6278 (Faint Clusters of Galaxies(WC09): Cycle 5)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make two color image observations of the =
faint galactic cluster GAL-CLUST-13 which is at a redshift of 0.72. The =
primary objective of this study is to investigate the color and =
morphological evolution of this galactic cluster. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.17 Completed GHRS/1 6083 (The Expanding Chromosphere of a Star)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make =
Lyman-Alpha emission spectrographic observations of the A class star =
HD128898 in order to study its expanding chromosphere. The observations =
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.18 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6359 (Core Properties of the Bulges =
of Spiral Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of spiral =
galaxy IC4390 in order to study its central bulge. The aim is to =
investigate the core properties, correlation's with global galactic =
properties, and the frequency of occurrence of multiple and/or miscentered =
nuclei. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.
