HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #1566

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 02/07/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 02/08/96

Daily Status Report as of 039/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FOS/RD 6091 (Ionization and Abundances of BALQSOs)

The Faint Object Spectrograph ( Red Side) was used to make =
observations of BALQSO 1524+5147 in order to study it ionization and =
abundances. This QSO is known to show broad absorption lines in its =
spectra. The goal is to observe lines from several different ionization =
states of Oxygen. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5999 (The Nuclear Structure of S0 =
Galaxies: A PC Imaging Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of S0 class galaxy =
NGC-3870 in order to study its nuclear structure. This is a part of a =
large survey of S0, E/S0, and S0/a class galaxies. The targets will cover =
a wide range in luminosity and environment. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed FOS/BL 5515 (Eclipse Mapping of the Touchstone Systems =
CM-Dra Cycle 4 Medium)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used in the Rapid =
Mode to make observations of the Touchstone System CM-Draconis (aka, =
GL630.1) to do eclipse mapping. The objective is to map the upper =
atmosphere of the M4Ve class component of CM Dra by measuring the =
disappearance of light during the eclipse of the secondary. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of S/C 6843 (Test of Technique to Avoid FGS1 =
Stalls)

Special tests were conducted using FGS #1 to test a technique for =
avoiding FGS stalls. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance =
Scale)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-2090 =
looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The purpose of this =
observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with an accuracy of =
10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5949 (High Resolution Imaging of Galaxies =
Responsible for QSO Lyman Alpha Absorption.)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make high resolution observations of Field =
0853 in order to study galaxies which are responsible for intermediate =
redshift QSO Lyman Alpha absorption. It is the extended gaseous region =
around these galaxies that produces the absorption. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6179 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5: Photometric =
Zero Point)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of photometric standard =
stars GRW+70D582 and G191-B2B in order to calibrate the photometric zero =
point. The calibration was done for 18 WF/PC filters. The observations =
were executed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.8 Completed GHRS/1 6170 (GHRS Echelle and G140M Long-Term =
Monitor-Cycle)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make =
calibration observations of standard star Mu-Col as part of a long term =
monitoring of the Echelle spectrograph and grating G140M. The sensitivity =
of the instrument will be measured at several grating positions. The =
observations were executed as scheduled and no anomalies were noted.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 8
Successful : 8

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8
Successful : 8

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 19
Successful : 19

2.3 Operations Notes:

Real-time Operations moved back to the MOR from SAMS at 039/01:45Z =
after completion of the SM-2 Internal Simulation #1. The simulation was =
terminated two hours early due to adverse weather conditions. Up to that =
point all simulation objectives were met.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Nothing at this time.
