DAILY REPORT #1687

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 07/31/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/01/96

Daily Status Report as of 214/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FOC/96 6775 (Secular Changes in the Jet of M87)

The Faint Object Camera (F/96) was used to look for secular =
changes in the jet coming out of the active galactic nuclei of Galaxy =
M-87. M-87 is a large (Ep Class) elliptical galaxy located in the Virgo =
galactic cluster. Comparison with images taken in pervious observing =
cycles will allow the investigators to measure changes in the jet, and =
the speed of various knots in the jet. Polarization images were also =
taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.2 Completed GHRS/2/1 6273 (Heavy Element Abundances and Isotope =
Anomalies in HR7775 and Chi Lupi)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) was used to =
make observations of the Hg-Mn (mercury-manganese) class star HD141556 =
(aka, HR7775) in order to study its chemical abundances and isotope =
anomalies. This star is known to exhibit unusual heavy element =
abundances. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no =
problems were reported.

1.3 Completed GHRS/2 6593 (Origin and Physical Conditions in the Local =
Lyman-Alpha Forest)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make high =
resolution spectral observations of active galactic nuclei of Fairall-9 =
in order to study the origin and physical conditions of the local =
Lyman-Alpha forest cloud which lies in the foreground of the quasar. The =
study of these data should provide a better understanding of the origin =
and physical conditions in this cloud and its relationship, if any, to =
near by galaxies. The observations were completed as planned and no =
anomalies were reported.
