DAILY REPORT #1680

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 07/22/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/23/96

Daily Status Report as of 205/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6352 (Dwarf Eliptical Galaxy Snapshots)

The WF/PC-2 was used to survey FCC324, from a sample of 30 dwarf =
eliptical galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6362 (Supernova Host Galaxy)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the supernova host =
galaxy Gal-014544. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed FOS/RD/BL 6017 (Soft X-Ray Transients, Outburst in Black =
Hole Accretion Disks)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both the Blue and Red Sides) was =
used to make target of opportunity observations of the cataclysmic =
contact-binary star J1655-40 which is known to show soft X-ray =
transients. These outbursts are believed to be caused by the accretion =
disk surrounding a black hole. The observations were completed as =
scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: =
Earth Flat)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. =
These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA =
illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new =
superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.5 Completed GHRS/1/2 6522 (Probing the Extended Envelope of the Zeta =
Aur Type Binary 32 Cyg.)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Sides One and Two) was used to =
make spectrographic observations of the Zeta Aug class binary system =
HD192909 (aka, 32 Cyg) in order to study its extended envelope. This =
binary system consists of a B class dwarf star, and a K class supergiant =
that eclipses the dwarf. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted. =

1.6 Completed FOS/RD 7204 (Pre-Perihelion Observations of the =
International Rosetta Mission Target)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
pre-perihelion, ultraviolet, spectrographic observations Comet Wirtanen =
(aka, comet 46/P) as part of a target viewing for the International =
Rosetta Mission which is scheduled to be launched in the year 2003. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 6213 (GHRS Aperture Offsets- Cycle 5)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make =
calibration images of the star HD155763 in order to determine to offsets =
of the instruments focal plane apertures. The purpose of this =
calibration program is to measure the relative wavelength offsets between =
the Large Science Aperture and Small Science Aperture with various =
gratings. A wavelength calibration image was also taken. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio =
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue =
continuum in radio galaxy 3C343.1. Combined with existing data, these =
exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color =
distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the =
optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.9 Completed FOS/RD 6577 (An Expanded Survey for Study of the =
Lyman-Alpha Line and QSO Mg II Absorption)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
observations of the QSO PKS0119-04 in order to make a survey of the =
Lyman-Alpha line and the 68 Mg II absorption line system. The =
observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6906 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 6 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor-Visual Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal calibration visual flat =
images as part of the Cycle 6 internal monitoring of the instrument's =
operations. This proposal defines the standard series of internal flat =
fields, which will be executed twice per month. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 8
Successful : 8

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8
Successful : 8

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 19
Successful : 19

2.3 Operations Notes:

Operations personnel have continued to recover all science data =
from the heavily-used STR.

HSTAR 5662 was written to describe a 23-minute, 28-second =
non-recoverable real-time engineering data loss due to a currently =
unexplained deletion of a scheduled contact from the network data base.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Nothing at this time.
