DAILY REPORT #1666

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/28/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/01/96

Daily Status Report as of 183/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2/GHRS/1 5828 (HST Far-UV Imaging and Spectra of =
Jupiter Coordinated With the Galileo Probe)

The WF/PC-2 and the High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) were =
both used to make images and ultraviolet spectrographic observations of =
the planet Jupiter in order to study the auroral zones located near the =
planet's magnetic poles plus Io's plasma current foot. These =
observations were taken at the same time that the Galileo spacecraft made =
spectral observations. The observations were completed as planned, and =
no problems were reported.

1.2 Completed Five Sets of FOS/BL 6166 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of =
Spectra and Wavelength Calibration)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make =
wavelength calibration images to measure the stability of the FOS Blue =
Side wavelength scale and spectral locations. A Taled calibration =
observations was also taken. The observations were completed as planned, =
and no anomalies were reported.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6189 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor - Vis Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal visual flat calibration =
images. Both photometric and narrow-band filters were used. The =
observations were executed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.4 Completed FOS/RD 6007 (Comparison of Large Scale Structures in QSO =
Absorbers and Galaxies)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
observations of Lyman-Alpha absorber QSO TON157 to do a comparison study =
of its large scale structure. This target was selected as a deep, =
redshifted galaxy from a survey which already exists. The observations =
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.5 Complete WF/PC-2 5993 (Dark Matter Distribution in A1689 from =
Gravitational Lensing)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy cluster =
Abell-1689-5 in order to study the distribution of dark matter in the =
lensing galaxy cluster system. This is to carry out an extensive survey =
of the galaxies behind this cluster. The observations were completed as =
planned, and no problems were reported.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6439 (Using Cepheid Based Distance to Test Large =
Peculiar Motions)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the spiral galaxy =
NGC-4603 which is located in the Centaurus galaxy cluster to look for =
Cepheid variable stars to be used to measure the distance to the object, =
which in turn will be used to study its large peculiar motions. If this =
galaxy is a cluster member, as appears from secondary distance indicators,=
then its peculiar velocity is inconsistent with that predicted from the =
density field as reconstructed from the observational distribution of =
galaxies in the cluster. The observations were executed as scheduled, =
and no anomalies were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration =
observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were =
taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the =
cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6431 (Determination of the Extragalactric =
Distance Scale)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4535 =
to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this =
galaxy. This will allow for a more accurate estimate of the distances to =
these galaxies through the period-luminosity relation for the Cepheid =
stars. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6195 (Flat Field Check)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several flat field calibration images =
by making observations of the large globular cluster Omega Cen. The image=
s were placed in each CCD using the photometric filters. These data, =
when reduced will allow the RMS error of the flat field to be determined. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.10 Completed FOS/BL 6781 (Soft X-Rays and the UV Spectra of a =
Complete QSO Sample)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to obtain =
ultraviolet spectra of the low-Z quasi-stellar object B21425+26. The =
ionization continuum of this object has been studied using the ROSAT =
satellite. The strengths and line profiles of strong and weak =
ultraviolet emission and absorption lines and the ultraviolet continuum =
were studied. The observations were completed as planned and no =
anomalies were reported.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5997 (The Cores of Elliptical Galaxies in the =
Coma Cluster)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the large elliptical =
galaxies GAL-130204 and IC4133 which are located in the Coma Cluster. =
The purpose is to study the luminosity profiles in their central nuclear =
regions. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.12 Completed FGS 6037 (Continuation of an Astrometric Search for =
Planetary Companions to Proxima-Cent)

The FGSs were used in the POS mode to make astrometric =
observations of the star Proxima-Cent and a sub-set of eight reference =
stars. This is to look for the presence of a planetary companion. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6678 (Nearby Young Dwarf Galaxies and Their =
Lyman Alpha Emissions)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the young, metal =
deficient, blue, compact, dwarf galaxy T1214-277 in order to study its =
Lyman Alpha emissions. The observations were completed as planned, and =
no problems were reported.

1.14 Completed S/C 5582 (FOC/48 Monthly Activation (Camera Section =
Only): Cycle 4)

This proposal was executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. =
These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA =
illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new =
superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.16 Completed FOS/BL/GHRS/1 5947 (The Relationship Between Galaxies =
and Lyman-Alpha Absorbers at Low Redshift)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) and the High Resolution =
Spectrograph (Side One) were used to make observations of Quasar =
Q1214+180 to study the relation ship between its galaxy and Lyman-Alpha =
Absorbers at low redshift. The relationship between the galaxy and low =
column density, metal poor quasar absorbers is poorly understood. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.17 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive =
Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.

1.18 Completed FOS/RD/BL 6017 (Soft X-Ray Transients, Outburst in =
Black Hole Accretion Disks)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both the Blue and Red Sides) were =
used to make target of opportunity observations of the cataclysmic =
contact-binary star J1655-40 which is known to show soft X-ray =
transients. These outburst are believed to be caused by the accretion =
disk surrounding a black hole. The observations were completed as =
scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 6604 (Photometry of the Oldest Field Population =
in the Magellanic Clouds.)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make both visual and inferred photometric =
observations of selected stars in the oldest field in the Large Magellanic=
Cloud LMC-063600. From these data, the ages and population densities of =
the cluster will be measured. The observations were completed as =
scheduled, and no problems were noted.

1.20 Completed WF/PC-2 6193 (PSF Characterization)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several observational images of the =
large globular cluster Omega Cen using the main photometric filters. =
During these exposures the spacecraft executed a 4X4 dwell scan so that =
the images of the object fell at 16 different locations on the CCDs. =
This is to sample the point spread function (PSF). The observations were =
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.
