DAILY REPORT #1662

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/24/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/25/96

Daily Status Report as of 177/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FGS 6641 (Continuation of Mass Ratio Determination for =
Double Stars)

The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric =
observations of the double star L722-22 in order to determine the mass =
ratio of its two components. The observations were executed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flat)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. =
These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA =
illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new =
superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.4 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 6188 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: =
Dark)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal dark calibration images. =
The observations were completed as scheduled, and no problems were =
reported.

1.5 Completed FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot Search for High Redshift QSOs with =
Far-UV Flux)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of =
the quasi-stellar object Q0315-570. This is to determine if this high =
redshifted object has a far ultraviolet flux. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2/GHRS/1 5828 (HST Far-UV Imaging and Spectra of =
Jupiter Coordinated With the Galileo Probe)

The WF/PC-2 and the High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) were =
both used to make images and ultraviolet spectrographic observations of =
the planet Jupiter in order to study the auroral zones located near the =
planet's magnetic poles. These observations were taken at the same time =
that the Galileo spacecraft was to make spectral observations. A =
wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were =
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6348 (Blue Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio =
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot images of the blue =
continuum in radio galaxy 3C239.0. Combined with existing data, these =
exposures will provide high spatial resolution information on the color =
distribution within galaxies, redding due to dust, spacial indices of the =
optical synchrotron jets, and colors of the active nuclei and tidal jets. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5927 (Nuclear Disks in Radio Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the radio galaxy =
3C278 in order to study its nuclear disk. This will be used to establish =
the morphology and characteristics of the disk, and the alignment of the =
disk with the radio jet. The observations were executed as scheduled, =
and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6184 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Photometric Calibration =
Monitor UV/OPT STD)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet and optical observations =
of standard star GRW+70D582 in order to monitor the photometric =
calibrations of the camera and to check for decontamination. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 6346 (Snapshot Survey of the Ultraluminous IRAS =
Galaxy Sample-Part 1 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of the =
ultraluminous IRAS galaxy QDOTLIR20. These data will be searched for =
multiple cores, which imply a merger has occurred, and for starburst =
regions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 7
Successful : 7

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 7
Successful : 7

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 17
Successful : 17

2.3 Operations Notes:

Further investigation into the data dropouts reported in =
yesterday's report indicates that 1) the entire signature of the previous =
ESTR #2 problem was not present, and that 2) the problems appears to be a =
STGT problem already reported in DRs 5567, 5436, 5396, and 5379. Another =
reason for believing that this is an STGT problem is that, in addition to =
the dropouts, the data are blocked incorrectly (forward and reverse time =
jumps are present in the NASCOM blocks).

For this twenty-four hour period, there were no significant =
operational problems.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:
