DAILY REPORT #1651

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/07/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/10/96

Daily Status Report as of 162/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were =
reported.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6431 (Determination of the Extragalactric =
Distance Scale)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxy NGC-4548 =
to be used in measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this =
galaxy. This will allow for a more accurate estimate of the distances to =
these galaxies through the period-luminosity relation for the Cepheid star=
s. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were =
noted.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: =
Earth Flat)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. =
These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA =
illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new =
superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.4 Completed FGS 6241 (Companion to W922 (GL831))

The FGSs were used in both the POS and TRANS Mode to make =
astrometric observations of star W922 (aka, Gleise 831) to measure its =
parallax and looking for possible companions. Several other reference =
stars were also observed. The observations were completed as planned, =
and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed FOS/RD 6449 (Spectroscopy of Two Further UV Bright High =
Red Shifted Quasars)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the newly discovered, =
ultraviolet bright, high red shifted quasar HE-2347-43 to look for =
absorption from systems along the line of sight to the QSO. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky =
survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel =
with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed FOS/RD 6536 (IZW-18: Building Model)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
observations of galaxy I-ZW-18-SEHI. This galaxy contains the H II =
region with the lowest known metallicity. Thus it is important to our =
understanding of the chemical evolution of galaxies, the primordial He =
abundance, and low metallicity stellar populations. The observations =
were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration =
observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were =
taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the =
cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6439 (Using Cepheid Based Distance to Test Large =
Peculiar Motions)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the spiral galaxy =
NGC-4603 which is located in the Centaurus galaxy cluster to look for =
Cepheid variable stars to be used to measure the distance to the object, =
which in turn will be used to study its large peculiar motions. If this =
galaxy is a cluster member, as appears from secondary distance =
indicators, then its peculiar velocity is inconsistent with that =
predicted from the density field as reconstructed from the observational =
distribution of galaxies in the cluster. The observations were executed =
as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed FOS/RD/BL 6017 (Soft X-Ray Transients, Outburst in =
Black Hole Accretion Disks)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both the Blue and Red Sides) were =
used to make target of opportunity observations of the cataclysmic =
contact-binary star J1655-40 which is known to show soft X-ray =
transients. These outburst are believed to be caused by the accretion =
disk surrounding a black hole. The observations were completed as =
scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.11 Completed FGS 6047 (Calibrating the Mass Luminosity Relation at =
the End of the Main Sequence)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of star =
GL866-FIXE as part of a study to determine its mass luminosity relationshi=
p. The purpose is to measure the precise parallax and relative orbit of =
its faint companion. The observations were completed as planned, and no =
problems were reported.

1.12 Completed GHRS/1 5950 (Spectroscopy of the Three UV Brightest =
Known High-Redshift Quasars)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make =
ultraviolet observations of quasar HS-1103+64 which is known to be one of =
the brightest high redshift quasars. The objectives are to measure the =
C, N, O, and Ne abundances in the halos of early galaxies, to measure the =
intensity of the ionizing UV background, to measure He I, and to study =
the Lyman-Alpha forest. The observations were completed as scheduled, =
and no anomalies were reported.

1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6964 (Photometry of Candidate Dwarf Spheroidal =
Galaxies in the M81 Group)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric and two color images of =
the candidate dwarf, spheroidal galaxy (dSph) GAL-100441 which is located =
in the M-81 galaxy cluster group. From these data, a color-magnitude =
diagram will be constructed, which will allow the determination of =
various physical properties for the candidate dSphs. Near the end of =
this 10-hour proposal, a loss of lock occurred at 161/210542Z. The =
observations completed as scheduled, and no further problems were =
reported.

1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 6364 (Snapshot Survey of Proto-Planetary =
Nebulae and AGB Stars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make some snapshot survey observations of =
protoplanetary nebular system QDOTULIR20 to study its circumstellar =
envelope. The purpose is to discern the evolutionary sequence that =
produces axially-symmetric planetary nebulae. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.
