HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #1630

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/08/96 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/09/96

Daily Status Report as of 130/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5964 (Detecting Emission Lines at Half the =
Hubble Time)

The WF/PC-2 was used as part of a parallel program to make =
observations which are used to search for emission lines in distant =
clusters of galaxies. The objective is to study star formation at Z=3D =
0.75. The observations were completed as planned and no problems were =
reported.

1.2 Completed GHRS/2 6169 (HRS Eschelle Wavelength Monitor)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to calibrate =
carrousel function, Y-deflection, resolving power, sensititity, and =
scattered light for both eschelle-A and eschelle-B. All exposures are =
internals. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of FOC/96 6349 (Snapshot search for High =
Redshift QSOs with Far-UV Flux)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make snapshot images of =
the quasi-stellar objects Q2226+023 and Q1338+381. This is to determine =
if these high redshifted object have a far ultraviolet flux. The observat=
ions were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 6250 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal =
Monitor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a series on internal calibration =
observations. Internal flats, biases, and K-Spot calibration images were =
taken. These observations are designed to monitor the health of the =
cameras. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.5 Completed FOS/BL 5928 (Hidden QSOs in "Warm" Infrared Ultraluminaou=
s Galactic Nuclei)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make =
spectropolarimetric observations of active galactic nuclei IR1334+24 to =
look for "warm" infrared ultra luminous galactic nuclei. =
Spectropolarmetry of this object was done from the ground at optical =
wavelengths, and the ultraviolet observations with HST are needed to =
distinguish between the different mechanisms producing the polarization. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky =
survey observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel =
with the prime science observations. The observations were executed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 6684 (WF/PC-2 Imaging of 2 JY Radio Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the radio galaxy =
6C1129+39 from the 6C catalog. These data will be used to look for a =
correlation of optical structures with known radio luminosity. If such a =
correlation exists, then it will allow the importance of the radio beam =
power to the optical structure to be quantified. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 6524 (WF/PC-2 Mapping of Dust Obscuration and =
Stellar Populations in Starburst Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make narrow and broad band observations of the =
nearby galaxy NGC-5253 in order to map dust obscuration and stellar =
populations in its star bursting regions. Its starburst regions are =
resolved with the HST, so the spatial distribution of the massive (i.e., =
bright) stars and the ionized gas map can be constructed. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.
