DAILY REPORT #1520

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 11/17/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 11/20/95

Daily Status Report as of 324/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6099 (Black Holes and Cores of Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to search for possible black holes in the =
cores of nearby early-type galaxies. The WF/PC-2 will be used to obtain =
high resolution images of several galaxies to identify those with bright =
cores, and to provide sufficiently accurate coordinates for the FOS, which =
will be used to measure the velocity dispersion around selected galaxies. =
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6030 (Clouds and Aerosols in Saturn and Uranus)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Uranus to =
determine the vertical/horizontal distributions, and the optical and micro =
physical properties of the aerosols and clouds of this planet. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5972 (Determination of the Extragalactic =
Distance Scale)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the galaxies NGC-2541 =
and NGC-3198 looking for standard candle Cepheid variable stars. The =
purpose of this observations is to help estimate the Hubble constant with =
an accuracy of 10%. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5353 (Low-Mass Binaries in the Hyades: =
Cycle 4 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the low-mass, late M-Class =
dwarf stars RHY110 and RHY126 which are located in the Hyades cluster. =
Some of the companion stars may be brown dwarfs. The observations were =
completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 6338 (Colors, Parallax and Orbit of GL229B)

The WF/PC-2 was used to observe GL229B, a recently discovered =
companion to the M-dwarf star GL229A. Methane has been detected in the =
spectrum of GL229B, and the evidence suggests that it has a mass of only =
20 Jupiter masses, and a temperature of less than 1000 K. The WF/PC-2 =
will obtain astrometric and photometric data of GL229B, and will also =
search for other possible companions. The observations completed as =
scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6187 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Earth Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make Earth streak flat calibration images. =
These streak flats will be used to produce flat fields, to map the OTA =
illumination pattern and, in combination with other data, to produce new =
superflats. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.7 Completed FOS/BL 5781 (Emission Line Variability in the Lensed Quasar =
Q0957+561: Carryover)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue side) was used to make =
observations of the lensed quasar Q0957+561(A and B) to study its emission =
line variability. From IUE data it was found that the flux ratio, A/B, =
varies significantly on a time scale of two weeks. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrently with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5924 (Nuclear Emission Line Region Associated with =
Compact Flat Spectrum)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make spectrographic observations of the =
nuclear emission region of galaxy NGC-6500 to study its compact flat =
spectrum. There is evidence that this jet-produced AGN is powered by =
accretion disks feeding massive black hole. The FGS acquisition for this =
proposal was approximately 10 minutes late in achieving fine lock due to a =
large V1 error. This event was reported in HSTAR 5367. No other =
anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6119 (Snapshot Survey for Companions of =
Planetary Nebula Nuclei)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot survey observations of =
planetary nebulae NGC-2400 and A31 to study their nuclei and to look for =
possible companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5908 (New Class Gravitational Lenses)

The WF/PC-2 was used to try to confirm the nature of several =
gravitational lens candidates, selected during a new radio survey. =
Observations will be obtained using the F555W and F814W filters. The =
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.12 Completed FOS/RD 6019 (Supersonic Velocity Dispersion in Dwarf Nova =
Accretion Disks)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
spectrographic observations of the dwarf nova WZ-SGE in order to study its =
supersonic velocity dispersion. The intent is to nail down the physical =
support mechanism for its accretion disk of this short period eclipsing =
dwarf nova. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 and FOS/BL 6328 (Saturn Near Ring-Plane Crossings)

The WF/PC-2 and the Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) were used =
to obtain spectra of Saturn at the time of the ring-plan crossing. The =
objective is to compare northern and southern properties at the time of =
the equinox. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 6137 (A Search for Brown Dwarfs and Luminous Young =
Planets in the Hyades)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of M class star RHY390 =
which is located in the Hyades cluster, looking for planetary and brown =
dwarf companions. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no =
anomalies were noted.

1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 5932 (Morphologies of High Redshift Radio Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations the high redshift galaxy =
GAL-0945-2 (at distance Z>2) in order to study its morphologies, =
especially the fine detail in clumping. The images were obtained in the =
continuum and Lyman-Alpha. The observations were executed as planned, and =
no anomalies were noted.

1.16 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 6236 (FOS Cycle 5: Location of Spectra =
and Wavelength Calibration: Red Side Detector)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make =
calibration observations in order to determine the location of the spectra =
and to perform a wavelength calibration. All observations were internal. =
A Taled calibration was also completed. The observations were completed =
as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.17 Completed GHRS/2 6169 (HRS Eschelle Wavelength Monitor)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to calibrate =
carrousel function, Y-deflection, resolving power, sensititity, and =
scattered light for both eschelle-A and eschelle-B. All exposures are =
internals. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were reported.

1.18 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy =
3C111.0 as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's =
morphology. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies =
were noted.

1.19 Completed WF/PC-2 5979 (The Mass Distribution Near 097+561)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain deep images of a lensed QSO. The =
objective is to derive the mass distribution of the lensing cluster by =
measuring the distortion of background galaxies. Knowing the mass =
distribution of the cluster, and the time delay between variations in the =
two components of the lensed QSO, it is possible to compute the Hubble =
Constant. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems =
were reported.

1.20 Completed WF/PC-2 5958 (HST Observations of New Gravitational Lens =
Candidates)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of object HE1104-180 =
which is a candidate for a new gravitational lens system. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.
