DAILY REPORT #1498

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 10/17/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 10/18/95

Daily Status Report as of 291/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FOS/RD 6089 (Eclipse Mapping and Tomography of the UV =
Emitting Region of DQ Her)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make rapid =
mode ultraviolet observations of the eclipsing binary star DQ-Her in order =
to do eclipse mapping and tomographic studies. Observations were made of =
both the ultraviolet continuum and emission lines. The observations were =
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6183 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: =
Decon)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make some internal flat, K-Spot, and dark =
calibration images. The purpose is to define decontamination procedures =
to be run during Cycle 5. The calibration observations were completed as =
scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking =
ultraviolet observations running concurrent with prime science =
observations. The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with =
flux excesses at 3000 A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. =
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.4 Completed FOS/RD 6048 (Separate Spectra of Stars of Known Very Low =
Mass in Nearby Closed Binary Systems)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make separate =
spectrographic observations of both stars in the nearby very low mass =
binary star system ROSS-614A. This system has an orbital period of only a =
few days. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems =
were noted.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5897 (Ages For the Oldest Star Clusters in the Large =
Magellanic Cloud)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of star cluster RETICULUM =
(NGC-2257) which is known to be one of the oldest clusters in the Large =
Magellanic Cloud. From these data a color magnitude diagram will be =
constructed that extends below the main sequence turnoff. The =
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6102 (Chemical Evolution and History of Star =
Formation in the Large Magallanic Cloud)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the "Bar" region in =
the Large Magellanic cloud to study the chemical evolution and the history =
of star formation in that region. The goal is to observe individual field =
stars near the main sequence turnoff in order to study the large scale =
process that control star formation and nucleosynthesis in galaxies. The =
observations were executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.
