HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

DAILY REPORT #1312

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z
Daily Status Report as of 025/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral
Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of
galaxies NGC-1512 and NGC-4096 to provide statistics on the nuclear cusps,
stellar condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby
AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby
active galactic nuclei of UGC-3223 and IC4218 to study the interactions
between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the
AGNs. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor.
1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical
alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration:
Internal Monitor 3: Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark exposures
to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and
characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD/BL 5532 (FOS Dark Monitoring)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red and Blue Sides) was used to monitor
the instrument's background (dark) images. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed FOS/BL 5349 (The UV Interstellar Extinction in M-31 and
M-33)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make
observations of star M-31-OB8-17 which is located in galaxy M-31 (aka, The
Andromeda Galaxy) to study interstellar extinction. There were two reported
guide star recentering events which lasted for a total of eight seconds. No
other anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed HRS/2 4518 (High Resolution Spectroscopy of Venus Clouds -
Cycle 3 High)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to obtain UV
spectra of Venus when it was near its greatest elongation from the Sun.
These observations will make it possible to follow temporal variations that
have been observed in the UV spectrum by other spacecraft. There was one
acquisition failure reported, but the subsequent science observation was
successful. (See Note 2.4) No other anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance
Scale: Cycle 4 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-3621 to be used in
measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy. The
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5123 (Imaging and Spectrophotometry of Nuclear
Activity in Liners)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make Narrow band observations of emission-line
galaxy NGC-5194 to be used to identify ionized gas clouds near its nuclei.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 11
Successful : 10

A non-science acquisition failed, which was part of the Venus
observations.

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 5
Successful : 5

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 16
Successful : 16

2.3 Significant HSTARs: None

2.4 Operations Notes:

Observations of the planet Venus were carried out on January 24. The
first two GHRS observations were smoothly performed. A subsequent FHST map
showed very small attitude errors; however, the guide star acquisition
failed, introducing a large attitude error. The cause of the acquisition
failure will be investigated by the Guide Star Acquisition Working Group.

As a result of the failed acquisition, the third observation of Venus
was made on gyros. The science data, received in real time, was good. The
attitude error at the time of the fourth observation, made with the
wide-field camera of WF/PC-2, was estimated to be 10 arcseconds. A Venus
image was captured on the expected wide-field chip with the science data
being of good quality.

All four observations were successful.

SADE-1R was turned on at 024/2004Z, and was selected as the "active
secondary".

Due to an significant increase in the number of bit slips occurring on
ESTR2, the ESTR configuration will be changed in the 030 SMS. This is earlier
than originally proposed. ESTR 1 and 3 will be configured as STRs and ESTR 2
as the ETR.

3.0 ANOMALY STATUS:

3.1 Significant New Anomalies: None

3.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None

4.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Nothing at this time.
