DAILY REPORT #1446

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 08/02/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 08/03/95

Daily Status Report as of 215/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5913 (Low Mass Binaries and the Luminosity
Function. )

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the low mass binary star
system MT012 (a late-type M class dwarf) to study the local stellar
luminosity function. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed FOC/96 5955 (Direct Measurement of Galaxy Distances)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make polarized light
observations of super nova SN1957D echoes. These data will be used for a
distance determination technique. The observations were completed as
planned, and no problems were reported.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5971 (HST Medium Deep Survey)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a long exposure medium deep sky survey
observations at latitudes larger than 10 degrees taken in parallel with the
prime science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled, and
no anomalies were noted

1.4 Completed GHRS/1 5866 (NLTE Spectral Analysis of PG1159 Type Stars)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make a NLTE
spectrographic analysis of STAR-15170 to study the GW Vir instability strip
and the photospheric parameters and composition. The observations were
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of FGS 6240 (Orbital Parameters of Known Binary,
Sequel - Fixed)

The FGSs were used to make TRANS Mode astrometric observations of
known binary star SAO103656 (aka, ADS11300) to obtain its orbital parameters.
This target binary star has a known period of 54 years. The observations
were completed as planned, and on anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 6253 (Pure Parallel Archive Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a pure parallel program taking
ultraviolet observations running concurrent with prime science observations.
The intent is to search for extra-galactic sources with flux excesses at 3000
A0 and galactic sources with excesses at 1600 A0. The observations were
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.7 Completed GHRS/1 5870 (Dead of Sleeping? Status of Magnetic Dynamos in
"Maunder Minimum")

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to make far
ultraviolet observations of solar type star HD143761. This star exhibits
weak, non-variable Ca II emission and long rotation period. The implication
is that this star may have a weak magnetic field and undergoing a "Maunder
minimum". The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.8 Completed FOS/BL 5926 (The Excitation Mechanism of Extended Emission
Line Regions)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make ultraviolet
spectrographic observations of knots in the extended emission line region of
the active galactic nuclei of galaxy NGC-5728 to study it excitation
mechanism. The intent is to determine if radiative autoionization shocks
help heat the gas in the extended emission line region. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 6254 (GTO Pure Parallel Program - Cycle 5)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make some long exposure observations taken in
parallel with the prime science observations. These were a random sample of
high galactic latitude fields. The observations were executed as scheduled,
and no anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5832 (Synoptic Monitoring of Seasonal Phenomena on
Mars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make synoptic monitoring observations of the
Planet Mars looking for seasonal phenomena. A variety of filters were used.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 6189 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 5 Calibration: Internal Monitor
- Vis Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal visual flat calibration images.
Both photometric and narrow-band filters were used. The observations were
executed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.12 Completed FOS/RD 5432 (High Spatial Resolution Kinematics of the Disks
Around Active Nuclei)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make high spatial
resolution observations of the active galactic regions of the Virgo cluster
galaxy NGC-4261. A grid of 12 offset positions were observed to measure the
rotation rate of the nuclear disk. The observations were completed as
planned, and no problems were reported.
