DAILY REPORT #1425

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 07/03/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 07/05/95

Daily Status Report as of 186/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration
Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of
the ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed FGS 6271 (L726-8/UV Ceti)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the binary star
L726/UV Ceti to search for a short period low-mass companion around either
component of this binary object. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration:
Internal Monitor 3: Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark exposures
to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and
characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5655 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration:
Internal Monitor. 2: Flats Part 2)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make both dark and visual flats. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5981 (Calibration of Nearby Type IA Supernova as
Standard Candles: NGC-4639)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Cepheid variable stars in
Galaxy NGC-4639 (which has produced a Type IA Supernova) to calibrate the
nova's absolute brightness so that it can be used as a standard candle for
distance measurements. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 6030 (Clouds and Aerosols in Saturn and Uranus)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the planet Uranus to
determine the vertical/horizontal distributions, and the optical and micro
physical properties of the aerosols and clouds of this planet. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6028 (Composition of Surface Units on
Io)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of Jupiter's moon Io
(Longitude 250). The objective is to create a multi-spectral map of the
surface from 0.22 to 0.79 microns. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 6126 (Evolution of Binary Neutron Stars
and their White Dwarf Companions)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of binary STAR-2145 and
STAR-2019 (Neutron stars/pulsars and their white dwarf companions). The
photometry will be used to determine the cooling age of these dwarf stars.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5706 (Morphology of Distant Galaxies - Cycle 4
Carryover)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of a field of view
designated as Field-0017. This is part of a study of the morphology of
distant galaxies. The observations were completed as planned, and no
problems were reported.

1.10 Completed GHRS/2 5885 (GHRS - Observations of Candidate Beta-Pictoris
Circumstellar Gaseous Disks)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make
observations of star HD158643 which is a candidate to have Beta Pictoris-like
gaseous disks. The objective is to confirm the existence of circumstellar
gas, and to understand its origin. Due to a large, uncorrected roll error
(~124 arc/secs.) following the guide star (GS) acquisition at 184/2300Z, the
GHRS onboard target acquisition experienced a GS loss of lock during an SI
error nulling maneuver, producing a HRS-10 NSSC-1 status buffer message. The
acquisition for observation #2 did not complete in time for observations #3
and #4, and those observations were skipped. Observations #5-10 occurred,
but were off-target with very low counts.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor. 1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical
alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 6052 (Excitation Mechanisms and Abundances in the
O-Rich SNR E0102.2--7219 I)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the O-rich supernova
remnant E0102-7219 which is located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The
images will be used to study structures and emissions from the knotty
filaments. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 6294 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance
Scale)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-7331 to measure
the period of individual Cepheid stars to determine the extragalactic
distance scale. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.14 Completed WF/PC-2 6282 (Stellar Populations in Dwarf Spheroidal
galaxies in Draco and Ursa Minor)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy
located in Ursa Minor to study its stellar population. An H-R diagram will
be constructed and the ages, metallicities, and luminosity functions will be
found. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 5977 (Cometary forms in the Helix Nebula)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Helix Nebula (aka,
NGC-7293, and PK36-57D1W) in several narrow and medium width filters looking
for cometary-like forms. The objective is to obtain sufficient spectral and
spatial information to determine the nature of the comet-like shapes seen in
this planetary nebula. The observations were completed as scheduled, and no
problems were reported.
