DAILY REPORT #1420

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 06/26/95 - 0000Z (UTC) 06/27/95

Daily Status Report as of 178/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration
Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of
the ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 6126 (Evolution of Binary Neutron Stars and their
White Dwarf Companions)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of binary STAR-1022 (A
neutron star/pulsar and its white dwarf companion). The photometry will be
used to determine the cooling age of the dwarf star. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were reported.

1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration:
Internal Monitor 3: Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark exposures
to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and to monitor and
characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5463 (Buried QSOs in IRAS-Selected Ultra luminous
AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the luminous IRAS active
galactic nuclei of galaxy IRAS1402+4 to try to resolve the polarized
scattering regions in its core. The observations were completed as planned,
and no anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed GHRS/1 5542 (GHRS Side One Wavelength (1st Order Gratings):
Cycle 4)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) used the spectral
calibration lamp (Side Two) to calibrate the Side One characteristics.
Notice that the Side Two lamp was used to calibrate Side One. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5655 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration:
Internal Monitor. 2: Flats Part 2)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make both dark and visual flats. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5837 (Ultraviolet Imaging and Spectroscopy of the
Icy Galilean Satellites)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of Jupiter's
moon Europa to study the albedo features caused by SO2
absorption. These observations will be coordinated with the IUE spacecraft
and other ground based observations. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.8 Completed GHRS/2 5887 (The Depletion Behavior of Chromium Relative to
Zinc )

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make
observations of star SK94 which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The
intent is to measure the relative abundances of Cr II relative to Zn II in
the interstellar medium. Because zinc does not deplete onto dust grains
while chromium does, their abundance ratio measures dust distribution. A
wavelength calibration image was also taken. During this observation, there
was an FGS loss of lock during a reacquisition. However, the observations
were completed as planned, and there was no reported effect on the science.

1.9 Completed GHRS/1 5276 (GHRS Side 1 Detector Calibration : Cycle 4)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used to conduct a
standard detector test that will be used as part of the routine calibration
for the HRS. The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies
were reported.
