Daily Status Report as of 121/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio
Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxies
3C288.0, 3C321.0, 3C326.0, 3C340.0, 3C332.0, 3C389.0 and 3C252.0 as part of a
continuum survey and to study the galaxies' morphology. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed GHRS/2 5382 (Boron as a Probe of the formation of the
Galactic Halo)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make
observations of the low-metallicity halo star BD-13D3442 to help learn more
about the chemical and dynamical evolution of the galaxy. The observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor.
1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the optical
alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5416 (Young Globular Clusters in Merger Remnants:
Cycle 4 Medium)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the galaxy NGC-7352
looking for young globular clusters. This galaxy is believed to be the
remnant of a merger of other galaxies. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby
active galactic nuclei of Mark52, NGC-4235, Q1241+1642, and NGC-4694 to study
the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar
matter in these AGNs. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral
Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of
galaxies NGC-4293 and NGC-4477 to provide statistics on the nuclear cusps,
stellar condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed GHRS/2 5424 (High Resolution Observations of the Jovian UV
Aurora: Cycle 4 Medium)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make high resolution
ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the aurora on the planet Jupiter
short of 2000 A0. The goal is to determine the kinetic temperatures of the
auroral region and the range of altitudes over which precipitating auroral
particles deposit their energy and H2 Lyman and Werner Band emissions. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance
Scale: Cycle 4 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-4414 to be used in
measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within this galaxy. The
observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed GHRS/2 6153 (Dynamics and Energy Balance in Stellar
Transition Regions)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make
observations of star HD159181 (aka, Beta Draconis) to look for the redshift
of spectral lines produced by C III, C IV, Si IV, and O IV, which would
indicate the presence of downflows in the star's transition region. A
wavelength calibration image was also taken. The observations were completed
as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5772 (PC Imaging of Gravitational Lenes, WF/PC-2
Augmentation, Carryover)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep exposure observations of the
gravitational lens system 1042+178. The images were obtained in two band
passes, with the longer wavelength filter intended for the lensing galaxy and
the shorter for the quasar. The observations were executed as scheduled, and
no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5703 (Ultraviolet Evolution of Elliptical Galaxies
at Moderate Redshift)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet observations of the moderate
redshift elliptical galaxy A895 to determine the nature of the hot stars
within this early-type galaxy. The observations were completed as planned,
and no problems were reported.

1.12 Completed FGS 6138 (Long Term Stability Monitoring of FGS #3)

FGS #3 was used to make astrometric calibration observations of stars
OF52, OF52-REF, OF63-REF, OF89-REF, OF91-REF, OF79-REF, OF51-REF, OF69-REF,
OF74-REF, OF72-REF, OF92-REF, OF93-REF, OF70-REF, et. al. located on open
star cluster M-35 to monitor the long term stability of the FGS. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.13 Completed FOS/BL 6146 (FOS Location of Spectra and Aperture - Part 2)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to conduct a test to
determine the repeatability of positioning the filter-grating wheel. All
observations were internal. A wave length calibration image was also taken.
All observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.14 Completed FOS/RD 5737 (Binaries in Globular Cluster M15 Spectra(FOS
37), Carryover Observation)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make spectrographic observations of degenerate
stars in binary systems within the globular cluster NGC-7078 (aka, M-15). The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.15 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium, High
Galactic Latitude)

The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects as
part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in parallel
with other prime science observations. The observations were completed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.16 Completed WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the
prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take pictures of a
large number of fields within 30 degrees of the galactic plane. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were reported.
