HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1274

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z
Daily Status Report as of 333/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed GHRS/1 5720 ()

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was used used to study
interstellar clouds by making observations of galactic halo star
HD215733. A wavelength calibration observations was also taken. The
objective is to study the interstellar gas by observing interstellar
absorption lines of various degree of ionization. the observations
were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed FOS/BL 5530 (FOS Location of Spectra and Aperture)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make Y-base maps
of the FOS detectors using internal lamps. The purpose is to
determine the location of the spectra on the diodes. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.3 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5562 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration:
Internal Monitor 3: Darks)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain several 30-minute long, dark
exposures to provide ongoing calibration of the CCD dark current and
to monitor and characterize the evolution of hot pixels. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.4 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5361 (The Nucleus of Comet P/Borelly
and Its Dust and Gas Emissions)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of periodic comet Borelly
to study its dust and gas emissions about one month after
perihelion, when it was close to the Earth. the observations were
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies:
A PC Snapshot Imaging)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of
galaxy NGC-3600 to provide statistics on the nuclear cups, stellar
condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration
Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of
the ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of FOC/96 5670 (FOC Internal Relative
Calibrations)

The Faint Object Camera was used to make internal flat calibrations
images. The relative pixel to pixel response of the FOC field of
view was measured using the onboard LEDs. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5489 (Multi-spectral Images of Vesta:
Cycle 4 Medium)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make multi-spectral images of the asteroid
Vesta in four filter passbands. The objective is to obtain a
geological map of this apparently igneous body. The baseline guide
star acquisition at 332/1429Z failed to get fine lock, and the
observations were made in single star coarse track with FGS #1. The
guide star is under investigation.

1.9 Completed FOS/RD 5441 (The Inner Regions of Quasars: Cycle 4)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make
spectrographic observations of the variable quasar 4C40-24. The
observations will be correlated with radio and X-Ray data for this
object. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies have been reported.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium,
High Galactic Latitude)

The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects
as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in
parallel with other prime science observations. The observations
were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5571 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats,
Smaller Set)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band
filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the
telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as
planned, and no problems were reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 12
