HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1278

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z
Daily Status Report as of 339/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5235 (Structures of Quasars and Related Objects
(WC10): Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make long exposure observations of quasar
B21425+267. The objective is to study the structure of the quasar
and the underlying galaxy, and any associated galaxies, jets, and
gravitational lenses. There were four reports of V2-V3 jitter which
appeared to be about three times normal. Also, the V1 observer bias
was unusually active during these observations. No other anomalies
were noted.

1.2 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in
Nearby AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby
active galactic nuclei of MARK-930, MARK-1408, NGC-1068, MARK-42,
NGC-3032, MARK-10 WAS2, MARK-423, NGC-3353 and MARK-5479 to study
the interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the
interstellar matter in their AGNs. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5458 (Evolution of Galaxies in Intermediate
Redshift Clusters)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain deep exposures of galactic cluster
ABELL0665 to measure its dynamical parameters. There was one
recentering event which was reported to have lasted for four
seconds. No other anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor. 1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the
optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.5 Completed FOC/96 5144 (Study of Optical Emission Associated With the
Radio Jets and Hot Spots)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96 ) was used to make observations of
optical emissions from the jet and hot spots of galaxy NGC-4151.
The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were
reported.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations
to make high galactic latitude observations greater than +/-30
degrees. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
problems were reported.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies:
A PC Snapshot Imaging)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of
galaxy NGC-4490 to provide statistics on the nuclear cups, stellar
condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.8 Completed FOS/RD 5433 (Testing the AGN Paradigm in Nearby Seyfert
Galaxies: Cycle 4 High)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both Red and Blue Sides) was in
safemode, and no observations were taken.

1.9 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4
Medium, High Galactic Latitude)

The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects
as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in
parallel with other prime science observations. The observations
were completed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5416 (Young Globular Clusters in Merger Remnants:
Cycle 4 Medium)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the galaxy NGC-3610 looking
for young globular clusters. This galaxy is believed to be the
remnant of a merger of other galaxies. The observations were
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.11 Completed FOS/BL 5658 (White Dwarf Calibration)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both Red and Blue Sides) was in
safemode, and no observations were taken.

1.12 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5571 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration:
Earthflats, Smaller Set)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band
filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the
telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as
planned, and no problems were reported.

1.13 Completed WF/PC-2 5476 (Continuum Snapshots of 3CR Radio Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot images of radio galaxy 3C75.0
as part of a continuum survey and to study the galaxy's morphology.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.14 Completed FOS/RD 5683 (Gravitationally Lensed QSOs Augmentation:
Cycle 4 Carry-over)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Both Red and Blue Sides) was in
safemode, and no observations were taken.

1.15 Completed FGS 5556 (Binary Plate Scale: Cycle 4 Calibration)

The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make observations of standard
star HD155103 to study the plate scale calibration in the central
portion of FGS #3. This will be used in binary star observations.
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.16 Completed GHRS/2 5694 (Spectra and Chromospheres of Carbon and M
Class Stars: Cycle 4 Carry-over)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to make
spectrographic observations of the N class carbon star HD223075
(aka, TX Psc). The spectra will be compared to models to learn more
about the density, temperature, and velocity field in the star's
outer atmosphere. The observations were completed as scheduled, and
no problems were reported.

1.17 Completed WF/PC-2 5343 (WFC Imaging of Nearby Bright Quasars)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the bright quasar PG0052+251
and its host galaxy. The goal is to study the morphology of this
galaxy, and to see how it differs from non-QSO galaxies. They also
will be looking for the relationship between the properties of the
host galaxy and the luminosity of the quasar. The observations were
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.
