HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1247

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z
Daily Status Report as of 292/0000Z

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed HRS/2 5735 (G160M Spectra of ETA CARs Condensation -
Carryover)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to observe a
knot in the southern part of the nebula. The proposers are
primarily looking for Mg II lines at 2800 A. The proposal completed
as planned with no anomalies.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Monitor 1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the
optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure om Nearby AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby
active
galactic nuclei of NGC-2992 to study the interactions between the
central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the AGN.
The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5655 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor 2 - Flats Part 2)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make both dark and visual flats. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5138 (A Deep Color Magnitude Array of NGC-6397)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make one centered and two
offset fields-of-view observations of the globular cluster NGC-6397.
This will be to construct a color-magnitude diagram and to study the
luminosity functions of its faint stars. The observations were
executed
as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5508 (Tracking Features in Titan's Lower
Atmosphere and on Its Surface)

The WF/PC-2 obtained images of Saturn's moon Titan to look for cloud
features, and possibly surface features. The observations completed
with no reported errors.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5329 (Coordinated Observations of
Neptune's Aerosols)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain images of the planet Neptune to look
for cloud features, including the Great Dark Spot, and to look for
temporal variations in the features. One guide star recentering
event was reported for a period of three seconds.

1.8 Completed HRS/2 5600 (Side 2 Wavelength Monitor (1st Order Gratings)
Cycle 4)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to make
wavelength and resolution calibration observations of its first
order
gratings using the internal calibration lamp. Three observations
were
monitored, and seemed to go okay. Two observations occurred during
LOS,
and will be analyzed later.

1.9 Completed HRS/2 5468 (The Mass of the White Dwarf of V471 Tauri:
Cycle 4 Medium)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side 2) was used to observe the
white dwarf in the eclipsing binary system, V471 Tau. The
observations were made when the target was at positions of greatest
elongations on the side of the companion star. The target's velocity
curve will be found from the strong Lyman Alpha absorption, and will
be used to calculate the mass. One guide star recentering was
reported lasting for a period of three seconds.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5571 (Cycle 4 Calibrations: Earth Flats, Smaller
Set)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band
filter
Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the telescope's
illumination pattern. The observations were completed as planned,
and
no problems were reported.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5353 (Low-Mass Binaries in the Hyades: Cycle 4
High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the low-mass, late M-Class
dwarf star RHY024 which is located in the Hyades cluster. Some of
the companion stars may be brown dwarfs. The observations were
completed
as scheduled, and no problems were reported.
