HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1074

PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST
Daily Status Report as of 045/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 5240 (SMOV WF/PC-2 Flat Fields
Calibration)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of visual internal flat images,
and Earth calibration images. 14 images were received and displayed.
They were reported to be okay.

1.2 Completed GHRS/2 5549 (GHRS Side 2 Dark Noise Monitor: Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make internal tests for routine monitoring
of detector dark noise. There was no carousel motion. The data came
down in the form of a STR dump. The data were reviewed in the OSS,
and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 4763 (WF/PC-2 QE and Throughput Measurement)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet exposures of the UV
flux-standard star BD+75D325 to be used for alignment studies. The
observations were completed in fine lock. A total of four
observations were completed as scheduled. The OSS monitored the
observations, and assessed the data quality. No anomalies were
noted.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2/S/C 5196 (GHRS SMOV Side 1 High Voltage
Turn On)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side One) was was turned on using
its high voltage for early calibrations tests. The GHRS came to high
voltage (21.56 K-volt) at around 043/0015Z. 15 calibration dark
images were also taken. The observations were received and
displayed. They all were reported to look normal.

1.5 Completed FOC/96 5139 (A Search For Low Mass Companions to Nearby
Astrometric Binaries)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to to search for faint
companions near the astrometric binary star BD+68D946. The base line
guide star acquisition got fine lock, and the observations were
executed as scheduled. Two FOC images were received and displayed.
No anomalies were noted.

1.6 Completed WF/PC-2 5091 (GTO High Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations
to make high galactic latitude greater than +/-30 degrees. These are
randomly chosen fields to sample very low luminosity stars in the
solar galactic neighborhood, galactic halo objects, and distant
galaxies. Two images were received and displayed. Both images were
reported to be nominal.

1.7 Completed FGS 4892 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars: Cycle 3, High)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the possible
binary star VA764 which is located in the Hyades open cluster. The
OSS monitored the observation. Except for one recentering event, no
anomalies were reported.

1.8 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 5320 (A New Size Constraint on Lyman
Alpha Clouds: Cycle 4 Medium)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make
observations of quasar Q0107-025D to look for interstellar
absorption lines. A wavelength calibration observation was also
taken. A total of twenty observations were received and displayed.
One recentering event was reported to have occurred during the
fourth observation. The other observations were reported to look
fine.

1.9 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium Deep Survey: Cycle 4
Medium, High Galactic Latitude)

The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects
as part of a medium deep sky survey. Several different filters were
used. The observations were taken in parallel with other prime
science observations. Seven observations were executed as scheduled.
A recentering event occurred during the first observation. One
observation still remains on the science tape recorder. No other
anomalies were noted.

1.10 Completed Two Sets of FOS 5486 (I ZW 1: A Template Fe II Quasar)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make high signal to noise
ratio observations of the quasar 1-Zw-1 (aka, One-Zwanky-One) to
help develop a technique to subtract the contaminating Fe II
emission lines from the quasars spectra at optical wavelengths. The
first set of eight observations were taken in fine lock, and were
reported to be satisfactory. FGS #1 failed to course track (See
Operations Note 2.1), and the next two observations were taken under
course track. They both were reported to look okay.

1.11 Completed FGS 2860 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic
Reference Frame, Part 3 of 6)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of
extra-galactic object NEWEGOA-11 to help tie the HIPPARCOS and
extragalactic reference frames together at the 0.0005 arcsecond
level. The base line guide star acquisition got fine lock. The
experiment completed without anomaly.
