HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1054

PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST
Daily Status Report as of 017/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed GHRS/2 4385 (Spectroscopy and Imagery of an External
Source; Cycle 3 High)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make spectroscopic
observations of three different regions in the Orion Nebula (aka,
M-42) to obtain its chemical abundance. All the data was received
and displayed. The exposures looked okay, but were reported as being
bad because the guide star acquisition did not achieve fine lock,
and failed to coarse track. (See Operations Note 2.1)

1.2 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 5240 (SMOV-WF/PC-2 Flat Fields
Calibration)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make four sets of visual internal flat
images.
The goal is to obtain flats calibrated to 1% accuracy. 14 images
were received and displayed. They were reported to be satisfactory.

1.3 Completed Three Sets of FOS/RD/BL 4746 (COSTAR/FOS Coarse
Alignment)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make pairs of
acquisitions, one from each side (i.e., Red and Blue), to be used
for coarse alignment and focus of the COSTAR FOS M2 mirror. The
cluster NGC-188-225 was used as a target object. The FOS/COSTAR M2
mirror was successfully adjusted in the Y axis, followed by a X axis
update. The test images were reported to look fine.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 4616 (WF/PC-2 Fine Alignment and Focus)

The WF/PC-2 was used to attempt observations of bright standard star
HD8538 (Visual Magnitude 2-3, and Color Index ~0) both in the visual
and ultraviolet, and using each of the CCDs at different focus
settings. 12 images were received and displayed. All of the images
were reported to be blank. No target was visible. There was an error
reported in the position of the target in the proposal.

1.5 Completed GHRS/2 5198 (The Evolution of Boron: Implications for
Galactic Evolution)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations of
the first magnitude star Acrturus (aka, HD124897). The intent is to
learn more about the chemical and dynamical evolution by studying
the Boron lines in the spectra. A total of eight observations were
received and displayed. Two of the observations were reported to
show the effects of a recentering event. The other images were
reported to be okay.

1.6 Completed FGS 5054 (High Speed Astrometry - A Search for Planetary
Companions to Low Mass Stars))

The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make observations of the
position of the star Proxima Centauri to determine the presence of a
Jupiter sized planet in orbit about the target star. The OSS
monitored the observations and assessed the data quality. Telemetry
was available for the last half of the astrometric observations. No
problems were seen.

1.7 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 4721 (WF/PC-2 Decontamination and
TEC Turn ON)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet photometric observations of
the star standard A+81D262, plus K-Spots, and dark calibration
images. All three sets of CCDs were used. A total of 21 images were
received and displayed in the OSS. No anomalies were reported.

1.8 Completed Three Sets of S/C 5254 (GHRS SMOV Side One Activation)

The MOSES turned on the High Resolution spectrograph (Side One) low
voltage, and no problems were seen in the telemetry. About ten
minutes later the HRS was safed by stored commands, and it was
recovered almost immediately on Side Two, as planned. The turn-ons
were monitored and reported to have gone well.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue and Red Sides) was used to make
two dark calibration images. The observations were received and
displayed. Both images were reported to be normal.

1.10 Completed FGS 2565 (Linking HIPPARCOS to the Extragalactic
Reference Frame; Part 1 of 6)

The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make an astrometric
observation of object 0109+224. This object lies near the apparent
position of extragalactic objects. This object will also be observed
with the HIPPARCOS satellite. The intent is to tie the HIPPARCOS
system reference frame to the extragalactic reference frame. The
observation was executed as scheduled, and no problems were
reported.

1.11 Completed GHRS/2 3936 (Absorption Cloud Physics in Seyfert Nuclei;
Cycle 2)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make spectrographic
observations of Carbon IV lines in the nuclei of Seyfert galaxy
05240 (Type Two). This is to help determine the structure and
velocity of the broad line clouds. Two different wavelength regions
were observed. The OSS monitored the observations and assessed the
data quality. No anomalies were noted.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 15
Successful : 14

FGS#3 acquisition failed to coarse track at 014/1404Z. The scan step
limit was exceeded, and the subsequent observation was successful in
coarse track.

Scheduled Reacquisitions : 21
Successful : 21

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled :33
Successful :32

At 014/1318Z FHST #1 and 2 failed a full update with insufficient
time to execute the command.

2.3 Significant HSTARs: None

2.4 Operations Notes:

SMOV operations continued smoothly during week 5, with activities
ahead of the milestone schedule. Highlights of the week included:
WF/PC-2 early release observations, decontamination monitoring,
start of flat fields calibration, and start of QE and throughput
measurement; FOC/COSTAR fine alignment adjustment; FOC early release
observations, and throughput and sensitivity measurements; and FOS
FGS coarse alignment operations and the start of FOS/COSTAR coarse
alignment operations. During the weekend, engineering tests for
GHRS Side One Activation were performed.

Over the weekend, there were no reported subsystem problems.

3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD:
