HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1049

PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST
Daily Status Report as of 010/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FGS 4892 (Duplicity Among Stars in an External Cluster)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of the possible
binary star VA407 which is located in the Hyades open cluster. The
OSS monitored the astrometry observation and no anomalies were seen
in the telemetry.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of FGS 5061 and 5068 (Linking HIPPARCOS to the
Extragalactic Reference Frame , Part 4 of 6 and part 6 of 6)

The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations
of the stars NEWEGOD-23 and NEWEGOD-53 whose apparent positions lie
near an extragalactic object. The intent of these observations is to
tie the reference frame to the extragalactic reference frame. The
observations were executed as scheduled. A recentering event was
reported to have occurred during one of the observations. No other
anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed COSTAR/U/FOC 4734 (COSTAR/FOC Fine Alignment)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used for a Mode 1 target
acquisition to center the target star HZ21. A 3X3 tilt scan centered
on the best FOC position was completed. A 256X256 FOC image was
taken at each of nine points, followed by a fine focus sweep. These
operations should find the best position of focus and tilt. The
observations were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was
assessed. No anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of FOC/96 5186 (Observations of an External
Object)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of the
ejecta from Super Nova SN-1987A to monitor its evolution.
Observations were taken with several different filters. A SIP
corrective maneuver was successfully uplinked to the spacecraft. A
total of nine images were received and displayed. Two recentering
events were reported to have occurred during the observations.

1.5 Completed FOC/96 5577 (High Resolution Observations of an External
Nova)

The Faint Object Camera was used to make narrow band ultraviolet and
optical observations of the environment around Nova Cygni 1992A. A
SIP corrective maneuver was successfully uplinked to the spacecraft.
One of the images was reported to be over-exposed. All the other
images were reported to be satisfactory.

1.6 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 4721 (WF/PC-2 Decontamination and
TEC Turn ON)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet photometric observations of
the star standard A+81D266, plus K-Spots, and dark calibration
images. All four sets of CCDs were used. A total of 19 images were
received and displayed in the OSS. Two recentering events occurred
during the observations, but they did not appear to have an effect
on the short exposures.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of FGS 2565 (Linking the HIPPARCOS to the
Extragalactic Reference Frame, Part 1 of 6)

The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make two sets of astrometric
observations of objects 0405-123IN and objects 340REF and 342REF.
These objects lie near the apparent position of extragalactic
objects. These objects will also be observed with the HIPPARCOS
satellite. The intent is to tie the HIPPARCOS system reference frame
to the extragalactic reference frame. The observations were executed
as scheduled. Three recentering events were reported to have
occurred during the observations.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 12
Successful : 12
Scheduled Reacquisitions : 23
Successful : 23

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled :32
Successful :32

Loss of Lock: The acquisition at 007/1156z had successfully acquired
fine lock. A star presence failure in both FGS @1202z caused both
FGS to revert to course track. Fine Lock was re-established at 1203Z
and the guidance period proceeded normally.

2.3 Significant HSTARs: None

2.4 Operations Notes:

SMOV activities continue to run smoothly. During the past week,
WF/PC-2 performed early release observations along with more
decontamination monitoring exercises. FOC executed coarse alignment
focusing, phase retrieval, COSTAR/FOC fine alignment, and some
preparatory work for early release observations. FOS conducted FGS
coarse alignment operations.

All HST subsystems report nominal performance.

3.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR NEXT REPORTING PERIOD:

3.1 Complete WF/PC-2 5190 (Observations of External Galaxies)

3.2 Complete WF/PC-2 4709 (WF/PC-2 Internal Monitor)

3.3 Complete WF/PC-2 5240 (SMOV-WF/PC-2 Flat Field Calibration)

3.4 Complete FOC/96 4932 (Post-COSTAR FOC/96 Fine Aperture Location)

3.5 Complete FGS 4892 (Duplicity Among Stars in an External Cluster,
Cycle 3 High)

3.6 Complete FOC/96 5191 (High Resolution Ultraviolet Observations of an
External Source)

4.0 ANOMALY STATUS:

4.1 Significant New Anomalies: None

4.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None

5.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS: None
