HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1234

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z
Daily Status Report as of 272/0000Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed FGS 5134 (Extragalactic Astrometry and Astrophysics))

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations of five
different
stars to tie the HIPPARCOS and extragalactic reference frames
together.
The targets in this set of observations were successfully acquired
and
observed. The observations were reported to be nominal.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5091 (High Latitude Parallel Program)

The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations
to make high galactic latitude observations greater than +/-30
degrees.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were
reported.

1.3 Completed FOS/BL 5532 (Dark Monitoring)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to monitor
the instrument's background (dark) images. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5655 (Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor - Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make both dark and visual flats. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5416 (Young Globular Clusters in Merger Remnants)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the galaxy NGC-3921 looking
for young globular clusters. This galaxy is believed to be the
remnant
of a merger of other galaxies. The observations were completed as
planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.6 Completed Three Sets of WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in
Nearby
AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby
active
galactic nuclei of ESO350-163, IIZW23, and ESO354-G3 to study the
interactions between the central engine, the stars, and the
interstellar matter in the AGN. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed GHRS/2 5650 (UV Spectroscopic Determination of the D/H
Ratio along the Line of Sight)

The High Resolution Spectrograph (Side Two) was used to observe the
stars of Epsilon Indi ( i.e., HD209100) and to study the spectra for
lines of deuterium and hydrogen. The observations were completed as
planned, but the OSS discovered that the target was not in the
aperture since the coordinates for the proposal were incorrect.
HSTAR 4927 was written to document this problem.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5678 (Resolution of the Upper IMF in the
Magellanic
Cloud)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the bright O class
star NGC-346 which is located in the Magellanic Cloud to determine
if this star actually contains combinations of unresolved stars. The
observations were executed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.9 Completed FGS 5657 (Duplicity Among Hyades Stars)

The FGSs (TRANS-Mode) were used to make astrometric observations of
star
VA68 located in the Hyades cluster in an attempt to find a close
binary.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5353 (Low Mass Binaries in the Hyades)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of the low-mass, late M-Class
dwarf star RHY158 which is located in the Hyades cluster. Some
of the companion stars may be brown dwarfs. The observations were
completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.11 Completed FGS 5752 (Monitor the Long-Term Stability of FGS#3-
Revised)

The FGSs were used to make a large number of observations of stars
located in open cluster M-35. This is a continuation of Proposal
# 5118, looking for long term changes in the geometric distortion
and plate scale. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were noted.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5419 (A Search for Very Low Luminosity Active
Galactic Nuclei in Nearby Galaxies)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy NGC-3642, which
is
known to have ultraviolet bright, low-luminosity, active galactic
nuclei.
The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.13 Completed FGS 5135 (Extragalactic Astrometry and Astrophysics - 1
of 2)

The FGSs were used to make astrometric observations to obtain data
needed to measure the HIPPARCOS reference frame with respect to the
extragalactic reference frame. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.
