HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1223

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z
Daily Status Report as of 257/0000Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program: Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the
prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take
pictures of a large number of fields within 30 degrees of the
galactic plane. The observations were completed as planned, and no
problems were reported.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor. 1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the
optical alignment, and to check for contamination. The observations
were completed as planned, and no anomalies were noted.

1.3 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance
Scale: Cycle 4 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-925 to be used in
measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxy.
The observations were completed as planned, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5569 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make flat field calibration images with the
VIS lamp, and with the internal source. The observations were
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.5 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and
Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of
galaxy 0329-3130 to provide statistics on the nuclear cups, stellar
condensations, and inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The
observations were executed as scheduled. There was loss from groups
1 and 2 due to a tape recorder track change. The data was not
recoverable.

1.6 Completed Two Sets of FOS/RD 5304 (QSO Absorption Selected Galaxies
in Field of 3C336: Cycle 4 High)

The Faint Object spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make
observations of 3C336.0 to look for absorption from galaxies which
lie along the line-of-sight to the QSOs. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby
active galactic nuclei of MARK40 to study the interactions between
the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the
AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5378 (Morphological Evolution of Galaxies in
Clusters at Z = 0.5)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of galaxy GAL-CLUS-0 to
study its morphology. The exposure time was 1200 seconds. The
observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5571 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Earthflats,
Smaller Set)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several ultraviolet and narrow-band
filter Earth flat calibration observations to correct for the
telescope's illumination pattern. The observations were completed as
planned, and no problems were reported.

1.10 Completed FOC/96 5469 (Externally Illuminated Proto-Stellar Disks
and Naked Jets)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make high resolution
observations of young stellar objects and proto-planetary disks in
NGC-1976 (aka, The Orion Nebula). The observations were executed as
scheduled. An observation was written across a track change of the
Science Tape Recorder (STR). Some observational data was lost due to
anticipated overwrites on the tape recorder. This was done according
to the instructions of the PI and of the SPSS, in order to preserve
the data from orbits 2 and 3. This data loss occurred because of the
TDRSS services being used for the current shuttle mission. This was
not a supprise.

1.11 Completed GHRS/2 5473 (The Interstellar Abundance of Krypton: Cycle
4 High)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations of
the star Lambda Orionis which is an O/B class star to study the
abundance of Krypton to provide information about stellar
nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution. The observations were
completed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 7
Successful : 7
Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8
Successful : 8

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled :10
Successful :10

2.3 Significant HSTARs: None

2.4 Operations Notes:

During this operational day there have been no reported anomalies in
any HST subsystem.

For the on-going SADE-1R anomaly investigation, data collection
during SA slews continues, and extractions are being performed from
archived data. From the latter activity, in the previous 70 days,
torque failure flags have been detected 10 times on the +SA wing and
17 times on the -SA wing. All data is being provided to ESA with
telecons being conducted daily.

3.0 ANOMALY STATUS:

3.1 Significant New Anomalies: None

3.2 Significant Unresolved Anomalies: None

4.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Nothing at this time.
