HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1195

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z
Daily Status Report as of 216/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Two Sets of FOS/BL 5448 (Spacially Resolved Maps of
Optically thick Accretion Disks: Cycle 4 High)

The Faint Object spectrograph (Blue Side) was used to make
ultraviolet spectrographic observations of the 13 th magnitude nova-like
optically thick accretion disk of star UX-UMA to map out its structure. The
observations were executed as planned, and no anomalies were reported.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 5369 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 Medium High
Gal. Lat)

The WF/PC-2 made a series of observations of high latitude objects
as part of a medium deep sky survey. The observations were taken in
parallel
with other prime science observations. An internal flat calibrations was
also taken. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies
were noted.

1.3 Completed FOS/RD 5529 (Cycle 4 FOS Discriminator Test)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to run
discriminator tests to determine if the discriminator settings need
adjustment from the Cycle 3 Values. Dark, Internal Flat, and Wave
calibrations observations were taken. The Observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.4 Completed WF/PC-2 5479 (Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGNs)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make snapshot observations of the nearby
active galactic nuclei of NGC-4383, and NGC-1275 to study the interactions
between the central engine, the stars, and the interstellar matter in the
AGN. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance
Scale: Cycle 4 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-7331 to be used in
measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxies. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5446 (The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and
Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the core region of
galaxy
NGC-7741 to provide statistics on the nuclear cups, stellar condensations,
and
inner stellar disks and dust lanes. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/1 5595 (GHRS ECH-A Wavelength Monitor:
Cycle 4)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make wavelength
spectral
lamp calibration observations to measure the instrumental characteristics
of
the Echelle-A spectrograph. The observations were executed as scheduled,
and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 5629 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Photometric Calibration
Monitor 1C: 4-Chip STD in F170W)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make photometric calibration observations of
the
ultraviolet standard star GRW+70D582. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5569 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make flat field calibration images with the
VIS lamp, and the internal source. Most of this observation was missing.
Only a small part of the first data group was present. The problem was
probably caused by the Science Data Formatter (CU/SDF) locking out. The
problem is under investigation. The SDF was reset @ 216:18:00 z.

1.10 Completed FOC/96 5477 (Spectral Index Mapping and Secular Changes
in the Jet of M-87: Cycle 4 High)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of the
nucleus, jet, and counter-jet in galaxy M-87. The observations were
completed as planned, and no problems were reported.

1.11 Completed WF/PC-2 5370 (HST Medium-Deep Survey: Cycle 4 High, High
Galactic Latitude)

The WF/PC-2 was used in parallel with the prime science observations
to make high galactic latitude observations as part of a medium-deep sky
survey. The observations were completed as planned, and no problems were
reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 5
Successful : 5
Scheduled Reacquisitions : 8
Successful : 8

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled :16
Successful :16

2.3 Significant HSTARs:

HSTAR 4859: WF/PCII proposal 5570 part of observation lost due to
an unexpected STR # 3 track change @ 214:23:45z.

HSTAR 4860: OTA Thermal program crashed @ 215/20:40z. PRS doesn't
support directive to initialize OTA Thermal program using the
maneuver verification file.

HSTAR 4861: FOS microprocessor bogged down @ 215:06:23z. FOS speed
check counts indicated error in one major frame. Also occurred @
215:10:08z.

HSTAR 4862: CU/SDF lock-out @ 215:11:25z. Executive 402 message
received @ 11:24z (AOS) caused by CU/SDF lockout. DCF reports only
128 packets of WF/PC observation 121 and only one packet from all
subsequent WF/PC observations were received. See OR # 10167 & 10169
for recovery procedures.
