HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1163

PERIOD COVERED: 0700 EST
Daily Status Report as of 171/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WF/PC-2 5560 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration: Internal
Monitor. 1)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make several internal bias, K-Spot, and flat
calibration observations to monitor the CCD camera electronics, the
optical alignment, and to check for contamination. A total of ten
images was received and displayed. No anomalies were noted.

1.2 Completed FOC/96 5146 (UV Observations of Globular Clusters)

The Faint Object Camera was used to make observations of the core of
dense globular cluster NGC-7078. A total of fifteen observations was
received and displayed. They all were reported to have the target
off-center. Also, there were some recentering events reported.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5092 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel
Program: Cycle 4)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations taken in parallel with the
prime science observations. This is part of a survey to take
pictures of a large number of fields within 30 degrees of the
galactic plane. Eleven images were received and displayed as
scheduled. Ten of the images were reported to look okay. There were
some recentering events reported. One observation was reported to
have had a reduced exposure time due the Take Data Flag (TDF) going
down due to a Loss of Lock (LOL).

1.4 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5643 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 45 Calibration:
Partially Rotated Filters)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make four visual flat observations. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and all four observations
were received and displayed. One was underexposed, two were
saturated, and one was okay.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 5216 (Io's Volcanic Surface and Atmosphere)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make ultraviolet images of the trailing
hemisphere (i.e., Western hemisphere) of Jupiter's moon Io. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and a total of eleven
images was received and displayed. They all were reported to look
okay.

1.6 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5427 (Calibration of Nearby Galaxy
Type IA Supernovae as Standard Candles)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of nearby galaxies
NGC-4496-A-F and NGC-4536-FI as part of an effort to find Cepheids
in this galaxy which has produced a Type I supernovae. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were
noted.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of WF/PC-2 5570 (WF/PC-2 Cycle 4 Calibration:
Earthflats, Large Set)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make a set of Earth flat calibration images
using different filters in order to construct high quality flat
fields of the OTA illumination pattern. The observations were
executed as scheduled, and no anomalies were noted.

1.8 Completed WF/PC-2 1070 (High Resolution of Radio Galaxies at Large
Redshifts)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make deep images of radio galaxy 3C368 to
study the evolution of its stellar population. Six images were
received and displayed. They all were reported to be okay.

1.9 Completed WF/PC-2 5397 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance
Scale: cycle 4 High)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make images of galaxy NGC-7331 to be used in
measuring the periods of Cepheid variable stars within the galaxies.
Four images were received and displayed. They all were reported to
look okay.

1.10 Completed WF/PC-2 5423 (The Tucana Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of the Tucana Dwarf
Spheroidal Galaxy. A total of eleven observations was received and
displayed in the OSS. They all were reported to look okay.

1.11 Completed FGS 4884 (High Speed Astrometry: A Search for Planetary
Companions to Low Mass Stars)

The FGSs were used to make observations of Barnard's star to look
for astrometric companions (i.e., a Jupiter-sized companion). The
baseline guide star acquisition and the astrometry occurred
completely during LOS, and therefore, it was not monitored.
The spacecraft was in Earth occultation when the telemetry returned,
so it was not possible to verify that the guide star acquisition had
been successful. No anomalies were noted.

1.12 Completed WF/PC-2 5384 (Resolved and Composite Properties of the
Giant H II Regions of M-33)

The WF/PC-2 was used to make observations of H II regions within
galaxy M-33 known as M33-NEB1 and M33-NEB7. A total of ten
observations was received and displayed. They all were reported to
look nominal, however, some recentering events were reported.
