HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #1021

PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST
Daily Status Report as of 327/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed PC 5014 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: PC Flats Narrow. 2)

The Planetary Camera was used to make standard Earth calibrations
images for flat fielding of PC observations. Medium and narrow
filters were used, with and without neutral density filters. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were
reported.

1.2 Completed FOS/RD/BL 5051 (FOS Cycle 3 Polarimetric Calibration)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red and Blue Sides) were used to make
observations of the standard star BD+64D106 to make polarimetric
calibration observations. The onboard target acquisitions were
successful, and the target was nicely bracketed. All of the science
observations were reported to be normal.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of PC 4902 (HST Medium - Deep Survey - Part 2:
Low Latitude - Cycle 3 High)

The Planetary Camera was used to make four long exposures taken in
parallel with the prime science observation. Areas of interest are
galactic structure and evolution. There is also the possibility of
serendipitous discoveries. The observations were received and
displayed in the OSS. There were four observations which were
reviewed, and they all were reported to be okay.

1.4 Completed Seven Sets of PC 4714 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: PC
Internal Delta Flats)

The Faint Object Camera was used to make seven internal flat
calibration images which will be used for the restoration of Earth
flat image. These images were altered due to changes in quantum
efficiency which occurred after decontamination operations. The
observations were received and displayed in the OSS. They were
reported to look okay.

1.5 Completed FOS/RD 4581 (Quasar Absorption Line Survey - Cycle 3 High)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make one
observation of quasar PG1008+133 to learn more about the origin and
evolution of gas clouds along the line of sight of this target. The
observation was received and displayed. The observation was reported
to be normal.

1.6 Completed WFC 4713 (WF/PC Cycle 2 calibration: WFC Internal Delta
Flats)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make a total of three internal
flat
calibrations images. All three images were reported to be normal.

1.7 Completed Two Sets of PC 5072 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: PC Flats
Wide. 1)

Both the Wide Field Camera and the Planetary camera were used to
make Earth Flat calibration exposures using the wide and medium band
filters. Six observations were received and displayed in the OSS.
Three images were okay, one was saturated, and two were
underexposed.

1.8 Completed Two Sets of FOS/BL 5050 (Cycle 2 Internal Wavelength
Calibration)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make calibration spectra
for every detector/ grating combination through the 0.3" circular
and 0.1" paired apertures. The observations were monitored in the
OSS, and the data quality was assessed. A total of five observations
were received, and displayed. All five observations were reported to
be normal.

1.9 Completed PC 5483 (Test of Simple Guide Star Hand-off)

This was a test of the new guide star hand-off capability for moving
targets. The WFPC was used to make a exposure of the fast moving
asteroid 3361-ORPHE, then the FGS dropped lock, and acquired another
pair of guide stars. The drift in the position of the asteroid
between the two exposures will be used to assess the successes of
the procedure. No anomalies were reported.

1.10 Completed FOS/BL 3441 (Post Asymptotic Giant Branch Evolution in
the Magellanic Clouds)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make three spectral
observations of the planetary nebula SMC-SMP-6 which is located in
the Small Magellanic Cloud. This is to determine the angular size of
the target. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
anomalies were reported.

1.11 Completed Two Sets of WFC 5013 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: WFC
Flats Narrow. 2)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make Earth flat calibration images
to be used for flat fielding of WFC observations. The observations
used the narrow band filters, both with and without neutral density
filters. The OSS monitored the observations and assessed the data
quality. No problems were reported.

1.12 Completed PC/FOC/96 3807 (Minkowski's Object)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) and the Planetary Camera were used
to make observations of Minkowski's object, which is a starburst
region triggered by a high energy radio jet. The history fo star
formation will be traced along the path of the shock front by
obtaining images over a wide range of wavelengths. The observations
were executed on schedule, and no anomalies were reported.
