HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #997

PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST
Daily Status Report as of 293/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Two Sets of GHRS/2 5251 (WF/PC Shutter Control AP Test)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make observations of
standard star BD+75D325 as part of a shutter control test. Version
5.2 of the NSSC-I flight software (FSW) contains change AP17,
which controls the WFPC shutter, and the HRS FSW. The test was
executed as expected, and it appeared to be successful. A total of
nine spectral observations were monitored, and they were reported to
look normal.

1.2 Completed GHRS/2 5041 (GHRS Sensitivity Monitor - Cycle 3)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make ultraviolet
observations of standard star BD+75D325 to monitor the sensitivity
of the HRS, which is expected to change slowly with time. The
onboard target acquisition was successful. Both sets of observations
were received and displayed in the OSS. They were reported to look
normal.

1.3 Completed Two Sets of FOC/96 4445 (SINS: The Supernova Intensive
Study - 87A Revisit - Cycle 3 High)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of the
supernova SN1987 which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
This is a continuation of proposal 3853. This is to obtain images of
the remnant with several filters over a long period of time to
obtain photometric data. A total of eleven observations were
displayed. Except for one recentering event, the other observations
were reported to be normal.

1.4 Completed WFC 4497 (Parallel High Resolution Imaging of Defuse
Objects in Magellanic Clouds)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make parallel observations of the
nebulae regions inside of the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is a
continuation of Proposal 3589. The OSS monitored the observations,
and assessed the data quality. No anomalies were reported.

1.5 Completed FGS 4938 (Parallaxes of Hyades Cluster Members - Cycle 3
High)

The Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to make astrometric
observations of the star VA-776 which is a member of the open Hyades
star cluster. These observations are intended to determine the
parallax of the stars and compute the distance modulus for the
cluster. This will help improve the estimates of distances to other
galaxies, which are base on the distance of Cepheid variable stars.
No anomalies were reported.

1.6 Completed WFC 4848 (GTO Low Latitude Parallel Program _ Cycle 3
High)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make two high latitude medium-deep
sky survey observations taken in parallel with the prime science
observations. Both observations were received and displayed. They
were reported to look okay.

1.7 Completed PC 5014 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: PC Flats Narrow. 2)

The Planetary Camera was used to make standard Earth calibrations
images for flat fielding of PC observations. Medium and narrow
filters were used, with and without neutral density filters. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were
reported.

1.8 Completed PC 4308 (Snapshot Survey for Companions to Planetary
Nebula nuclei - Cycle 3 High)

The Planetary Camera was used to make an observation of the central
region of planetary nebula ABELL21. It is possible that the central
star in a double star. The observations was received and displayed
in the OSS, the data was reported to be normal.
