HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #987

PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST
Daily Status Report as of 279/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed HSP/POL 4887 (X-Ray Binaries - Augmentation - Cycle 3
High)

The High Speed Photometer was used to make 18 photometric and
polarimetric observations of X-Ray binary star 4U1907+09 to obtain
more information about the structure and condition in the gas
streams connecting the primary star to its neutron companion. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and all 18 observations
were reported to look normal.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of WFC 5023 (Calibration/ WFPC Cycle 3
Polarization Calibration)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make polarization calibration
observations by using images of a non-polarized standard star. This
will allow for the absolute transmittance of the polarized optical
path to be established. Four images were received and displayed. One
was reported to be saturated, and the other three were okay.

1.3 Completed WFC 5075 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC Flats Wide. 1)

Observations were made to make two standard calibration images to
obtain Earth flats using the Wide Field Camera. A total of two
observations were taken. Both images were reported to be saturated.

1.4 Completed Two Sets of WFC 5013 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC Flats
Narrow. 2)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make two Earth flat calibration
images to be used for flat fielding of WFC observations. The
observations used the narrow band filters, both with and without
neutral density filters. Both observations were received and
displayed. One was reported to be partially saturated, and the other
was normal.

1.5 Completed WFC 4929 (WF/PC Cycle 2: Improved Dark Calibration)

The Planetary Camera was used to make two dark calibration images.
The two exposures lasted 1200 seconds each, and the camera was
pre-flashed before the observations. Both observations were reported
to be normal exposures.

1.6 Completed FOC/96 3728 (Imaging Hot Stellar Content of Early Type
Galaxies)

The Faint Object Camera (f/96) was used to make observations of
galaxy NGC-1399. These observations are taken in conjunction with
longer wavelength ground based observations to measure the spectral
energy distribution as a function of radial distance. Also,
observations were made looking for clumpiness in ultraviolet
radiation that might be present around any possible hot young stars.
A total of four observations were received and displayed. No
anomalies were noted.

1.7 Completed WFC 4381 (HST Medium - Deep Survey - Cycle 3)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make two set of medium-deep high
latitude sky survey observations taken in parallel with the prime
science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled,
and no problems were reported.

1.8 Completed PC 5027 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: Rapid Internal Monitor
- Part 2)

The Planetary Camera was used to make internal flat observations to
check for quantum efficiency hysteresis. This is a continuation of
Proposal 4140. Two images were taken, and both were reported to look
normal.

1.9 Completed FOC/96 5042 (FOC f/96 Aperture Location Monitoring)

The Faint Object camera was used to make observations of two
standard astrometric stars NGC-118-54 and NGC-188-B96 which are 10.5
arcseconds apart. The images will be used to verify the V2 and V3
aperture locations in the Project Data Base. Three observations were
executed without problems.

1.10 Completed HSP/UV2 4943 (A Search for UV Variability in Nova Cyg
1992 - Cycle 2 High)

The High speed Photometer (UV2) was used to make observations of
Nova Cygni 1992 in an attempt to explore the physical conditions
near the white dwarfs in the system. Two sets of observations were
received. Both were reported to be well centered.

1.11 Completed HSP/POL 4942 (Active Galactic Nuclei - Cycle 2 High)

The High Speed photometer was used to make observations of the
active galactic nucleus of variable galactic object BL-Lac. This is
to monitor the intensity and linear polarization of the radiation
emitted by the active galactic nuclei. The observations were
monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. No
anomalies were noted.

1.12 Completed GHRS/2 4067 (GHRS 1st Order Grating Spectral Lamp Test)

The High Resolution Spectrograph was used to make lamp mini-function
wavelenght calibration observations for the first order gratings.
This was strictly an internal test. No external sources were used.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were
reported.

1.13 Completed PC 4764 (Investigation of the Dynamics of Binary
Asteroids)

The Planetary Camera was used to make images of the asteroid 146
LUCINA which is suspected to be a binary asteroid based on its
unusual light curve. The observations were received and displayed.
They were reported to look okay.
