HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #974

PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST
Daily Status Report as of 260/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed WFC/PC 5026 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: Rapid Internal

Monitor)

The Wide Field Camera and the Planetary Camera were used to make
internal flat calibration images. These images will be used to look
for measles and daisies (i.e., different forms of contamination),
and to monitor scattered light. The observations were executed as
scheduled, and no problems were reported.

1.2 Completed FOS/4396 (QSO Absorption System Snapshot Survey - Part 1
of 3: cycle 3 High)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make one
spectrographic observation of quasar 0537-4406 to look for
absorption line systems at low red shift, emission lines, and to
study the QSO's continuum. The observations was received in real
time. Although the acquisition only reached coarse track, the
observations looked fine.

1.3 Completed FGS 5183 (A Critical Test of the Galactic Escape Velocity

at R(sun))

The Fine Guidance Sensors were used to make astrometric observations
of the high velocity star G-1625 to determine its galactic escape
velocity. The FGSs was used in the POS mode to measure the target's
trigonometric parallax and proper motion. The OSS monitored the
observations and assessed the data quality. Although only one

STOP flag occurred, the FGS 3 scan patterns seen for most of the
targets wre not as expected. There were no other problems seen
in the telemetry. HSTAR #4348 was written to document this.

1.4 Completed Four Sets of WFC 4381 (HST Medium - Deep Survey - Cycle 3)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make four sets of medium-deep high
latitude sky survey observations taken in parallel with the prime
science observations. The observations were executed as scheduled
and looked OK, but there were three segments of data missing from
one of the observations. The DCF was also missing part of the
same observation.

1.5 Completed WFC/PC 4770 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: Internal Monitor

Proposal)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make one bias and one dark
calibration images. These data are required for routine calibration
of the instrument and for data reduction purposes. Both of the
observations were reported to be normal calibration images.

1.6 Uplinked Updated Ephemeris Tables, Per MOSES 2871

1.7 Completed PC 5014 (WF/PC Cycle 3 calibration: PC Flats Narrow. 2)

The Planetary Camera was used to make standard Earth calibrations
images for flat fielding of PC observations. Medium and narrow
filters were used, with and without neutral density filters. The
observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were
reported other than two of the flats were underexposed.

1.8 Completed FOS/RD 4528 (SINS: The Supernova Intensive Study - SN1992)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make Red Side ultraviolet
observations of the Supernova SN1992. The OSS monitored the
observations and assessed the data quality. No problems were
reported.

1.9 Completed FOS 4276 (The abundance and Evolution of Carbon in the

Spiral Galaxy NGC-2403)

The Faint Object Spectrograph (Red Side) was used to make
spectrographic observations of carbon absorption lines in galaxy
NGC-2403. The observations were executed as scheduled, and no
problems were reported.
