HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #972

PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST
Daily Status Report as of 258/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed PC 5073 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: PC Flats Wide. 2)

The Planetary Camera was used to make two sets of Earth flat
calibration images using different filter combinations. These images
will be used for flat field corrections of science images made with
the PC. Both images were reported to be underexposed.

1.2 Completed Two Sets of FGS 5100 (HIPPARCOS Plate Scale Calibration:

Cycle 3 Instrument Scientist Calibration)

Fine Guidance Sensor #3 was used to make POS MODE observations of
stars HP39-2250 AND HP39-225-R. This pair of stars were observed
also with the HIPPARCOS Astrometry Satellite. These observations
will be used to do an overall average calibration of the plate scale
on FGS #3. The astrometric observations were monitored in the OSS,
and no problems were seen in the telemetry. No anomalies were
reported.

1.3 Completed PC 5014 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: PC Flats Narrow. 2)

The Planetary Camera was used to make four standard Earth
calibrations images for flat fielding of PC observations. Medium and
narrow filters were used, with and without neutral density filters.
All four observations were received and displayed. The first
observations was reported to be okay, the second was completely
saturated, the third was partially saturated, and the fourth was
underexposed on the edges.

1.4 Completed GHRS/2 4873 (Local Interstellar Medium and D/H Ratio -

Cycle 3 Baseline Time - Medium)

The High Resolution spectrograph was used to make spectral
observations of the first magnitude star Capella and its binary star
HR1099 (aka, HD22468 to obtain the interstellar lines in its spectra
to estimate the D/H ratio along the line of sight. The spectra will
cover Lyman Alpha, Magnesium, and Iron Lines. A total of seven
observations were made. The 3X3 spiral search was successful. The
spectral observations were monitored and displayed. they were
reported to look okay..

1.5 Uplinked Updated Ephemeris Tables, Per MOSES 2871

1.6 Completed Three Sets of WFC 5013 (WF/PC Cycle 3 Calibration: WFC

Flats Narrow. 2)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make six Earth flat calibration
images to be used for flat fielding of WFC observations. The
observations used the narrow band filters, both with and without
neutral density filters. Out of the six observations, four were
reported to look okay, and two were saturated.

1.7 Completed WFC 5075 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: WFC Flats Wide. 1)

Observations were made to make two standard calibration images to
obtain Earth flats using the Wide Field Camera. Both medium and wide
band filters were used. Both observations were reported to be
saturated.

1.8 Completed FOS 4549 (Ultraviolet Spectropolarimetry of Comet

P/West-Kohoutek-Ikemmura)

The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to make spectropolarmetric
observations of the comet West-Kohouttek-Ikemura (aka, WKI) The
observations were made at two different phase angles. This will be
used to determine how the polarization of the light scattered from
the Cometary dust depends upon the phase angle and wavelength. A new
ephemeris for the comet was received last week. An ephemeris
correction slew was uplinked to the spacecraft prior to the WFPC
decision observation, and also incorporated into the centering slew.
The observations were monitored in the OSS, and no problems were
reported.

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions : 6
Successful : 6
Scheduled Reacquisitions : 6
Successful : 6

There was a Loss of Lock at 257/1205Z shortly
after a guide star acquisition. Fine lock was
lost on both guide stars. No science
observations were affected. The problem was

reviewed and is well understood.

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled : 17
Successful : 17

2.3 Significant HSTARs: None

2.4 Operations Note:

The Internal Simulation #5 - Repeat 2 (Deploy) was successfully
completed yesterday (Tuesday, Sept. 14). The simulation lasted for
about 12 hours. All test objectives were met.
