HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE
DAILY REPORT #913

PERIOD COVERED: 0800 EST
Daily Status Report as of 173/1200Z.

1.0 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Three Sets of WFC 4277 (Calibration of Nearby Galaxies Type
IA Supernaovae as Standard Candles)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make three observations of the
galaxy NGC-5253 to determine the periods of its known Cepheid
variable stars. This will make it possible to accurately determine
the distance to this galaxy. The observations were reported to be
okay.

1.2 Completed WFC 4770 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: Internal Monitor
Proposal)

The Wide Field Camera was used to make one bias and one dark
calibration images. These data are required for routine calibration
of the instrument and for data reduction purposes. Both of the
observations were reported to be normal calibration images.

1.3 Completed PC 4929 (WF/PC Cycle 2: Improved Dark Calibration)

The Planetary Camera was used to make two dark calibration images.
Both exposures lasted 1200 seconds, and the camera was pre-flashed.
Both calibrations images were reported to be normal.

1.4 Completed FOC/96 3801 (Search for QSOs Suitable for Subsequent
Observation of He II 304)

The Faint Object Camera was used to attempt to make observations of
quasar 1406+123 to measure the levels of its ultraviolet flux, to
see if the flux levels are high enough for subsequent observations
using the GHRS and FOS. The guide star acquisition prior to the
observation failed to attain fine lock, and to observation was
completed in course track. (See Note 2.1)

1.5 Completed FOC/96 4804 (UV Imaging of Nearby Galaxies with FOC/96)

The Faint Object Camera was used to make one ultraviolet snapshot
image of nearby galaxy ESO-0241-2. The exposure lasted for ten
minutes and used filter F220W. The observation was received via the
science tape recorder playback and displayed in the OSS. No problems
were noted with the data.

1.6 Completed WFC 5010 (Determination of the Extragalactic Distance
Scale. III. M-101. Recovery)

The Wide Field Camera was used for a search of Cepheid variable
stars in the Sc class spiral galaxy M-101 (aka, NGC-5457) located in
Ursa Major. This will help determine the correct distance to this
galaxy. This distance will be used to find the true luminosity of
the type-Ia class supernova which has been observed in this galaxy.
The observations were executed as scheduled, and no problems were
reported.

1.7 Completed PC/WFC 4109 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: Rapid Internal
Monitor)

Rapid Internal Monitoring observations were made with both the Wide
Field Camera and the Planetary Camera using filter F555W to look for
new forms of contamination (i.e. daises and measles), and the
possible return of quantum efficiency hysteresis. The observations
were monitored in the OSS, and the data quality was assessed. No
problems were reported.

1.8 Completed PC 4140 (WF/PC Cycle 2 Calibration: Rapid Internal Monitor)

The WFPC was used to make internal flat calibrations images to check
for new forms of contamination (i.e., Daises and measles), and to
check for the possible return of quantum efficiency hysteresis. The
observations completed as scheduled, and no problems were reported.
