DAILY REPORT # 3123

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/22/02 - 0000Z (UTC) 05/23/02

OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

WF/PC-2 8059

POMS Test Proposal: Targeted Parallel Archive Proposal.

was used to observe the parallel opportunities available in the neighborhood of
bright galaxies are treated in a slightly different way from the normal pure
parallels. Local Group galaxies offer the opportunity for a closer look at
young
stellar populations. Narrow-band images in F656N can be used both to identify
young stars via their emission lines, and to map the gas distribution in
star-forming regions.

NICMOS 8790

NICMOS Post-SAA calibration - CR Persistence Part 1.

A new procedure proposed to alleviate the CR-persistence problem of NICMOS.
Dark frames will be obtained immediately upon exiting the SAA contour 23, and
every time a NICMOS exposure is scheduled within 50 minutes of coming out
of the
SAA. The darks will be obtained in parallel in all three NICMOS Cameras. The
POST-SAA darks will be non-standard reference files available to users with a
USEAFTER date/time mark.

STIS/CCD 8902

Dark Monitor-Part 2.

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to monitor the darks.

STIS/CCD 8904

Bias Monitor-Part 2.

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to monitor the bias in
the 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 bin settings at gain=1, and 1x1 at gain = 4 in order
to build up high-S/N superbiases and track the evolution of hot columns.

WFPC2 8938

WFPC2 CYCLE 9 SUPPLEMENTAL DARKS pt3/3.

characterizing the evolution of hot pixels.

ACS/WFC/HRC 8947

Weekly Test.

noise, the development of hot pixels and test for any source of noise in
ACS CCD
detectors. This program will be executed at least once a day for the entire
lifetime of ACS.

NICMOS 8982

NICMOS Plate Scale

Measure the plate scale, field rotation and field distortion for each NICMOS
camera. The intercamera astrometric solution will also be found

NICMOS 8988

NICMOS Astronomical Persistence Test

This proposal tests the persistence of the NICMOS cameras at the temperature
established by the NCS. A series of saturated exposures followed by dark
integrations are performed for each camera. The exposures have a duration to
saturate the detectors by more than a factor of 100. To facilitate comparison
with the previous SMOV results the same target, HD106965, is utilized.

STIS/CCD 9066

Closing in on the Hydrogen Reionization Edge of the Universe.

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used in parallel constrain
the Hydrogen reionization edge in emission that marks the transition from a
neutral to a fully ionized IGM at a predicted redshifts.

WF/PC-2 9080

Transition from Non-radiative to Radiative Shocks in the Cygnus Loop.

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain narrow band HAlpha and O III imaging of faint
filaments in the northeastern Cygnus Loop that represent the location of the
primary shock front as it first encounters the ISM.

FGS/1 9089

Parallaxes of Cataclysmic Variables: Understanding Their Peculiar Secondary
Stars.

Fine Guidance Sensor #1 was used to measure precise parallaxes for three
additional CVs {WZ Sge, RU Peg, and YZ Cnc}, whose orbital periods span a much
larger range than explored in previous observations, allowing examination
of how
the accretion luminosity and secondary star change with orbital period.

STIS/CCD 9110

A Search for Kuiper Belt Object Satellites.

collisions thought to have taken place in the primordial Kuiper belt suggest
that many Kuiper belt objects {KBOs} could have suffered binary-forming
collisions similar to that which formed the Pluto -- Charon binary.
Detection of
such KBO satellites would allow measurement of KBO masses, would help to
understand the past collisional environment of the Kuiper belt, and would
give a
context to the otherwise unique-seeming formation of the Pluto -- Charon
binary.

STIS/CCD/MA1 9228

Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of R Coronae Borealis Stars -- Broad Lines from an
Accretion Disc.

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD and MA1) was used to obtain
spectra of three R Coronae Borealis {RCB} stars that will provide novel data on
hot gas near these stars.

NICMOS 9269

NICMOS Parallel Thermal Background

NICMOS Camera 3 pure parallel exposures in the F222M filter will be
obtained for
the entire duration of SMOV to establish the stability of the
HST+NCS+Instrument
thermal emission.

STIS/CCD 9317

Pure Parallel Imaging Program: Cycle 10.

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (CCD) was used to perform the default
archival pure parallel program for STIS during cycle 10.

WF/PC-2 9318

POMS Test Proposal: WFII Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation.

The WF/PC-2 was used to perform the generic target version of the WFPC2
Archival
Pure Parallel program. The program was used to take parallel images of random
areas of the sky, following the recommendations of the Parallels Working
Group.

WF/PC-2 9319

POMS Test Proposal: WFII Backup Parallel Archive Proposal II.

The WF/PC-2 was used to execute a POMS test proposal, designed to simulate
future scientific plans.

ACS/HFC 9560

CCD Linearity Check.

The Advanced Camera for Surveys (HFC) was used to obtain several exposures with
both the to delineate linearity at both low and high signal levels. This is an
exploratory set of observations aimed at basic instrument characterization. It
is expected that positive results in some areas may serve to enable
particularly
demanding science observations: negative indications could lead to the need for
corrections to be developed for some signal regimes. Each gain setting can have
unique linearity issues, therefore exploratory observations with gains =1, 2, 4
e-/DN will be performed. Another specific goal is to obtain data that will
allow
accurate photometry to be extracted for point sources that saturate the
detector.

ACS/WFC/HRC 9566

CCD Hot Pixel Annealing.

The Advanced Camera for Surveys (WFC and HRC) was used to perform hot pixel
annealing that will be performed once per month. The CCD TECs will be
turned off
and heaters will be activated to bring the WFC detector temperature to about
+10C. The HRC temperature will reach about 30C. This state will be held for
approximately 24 hours, after which the heaters are turned off, the TECs turned
on, and the CCDs returned to normal operating condition.

ACS/WFC 9575

Default {Archival} Pure Parallel Program.

The Advanced Camera for Surveys (WFC) was used to test ACS pure parallels in
POMS.
