Microsoft Windows 2000 and
|
The migration of existing Institute PCs to Windows 2000 will start in June of this year, with an expected completion date of April 1, 2001. If you have requirements for Windows 2000 prior to this date, please email your request to rrussell@stsci.edu; otherwise, email migration requests to pcsupport@stsci.edu.
CSO staff members have been running the Windows 2000 operating system for nearly a year, getting a feel for the changes and gaining the experience needed to support general use at the Institute. Everyone has had favorable remarks; the reliability has been the most pleasant surprise. So far, no system running Windows 2000 has had a Blue Screen of Death!
Following are the minimum hardware requirements to run Windows 2000.
Memory- 128 megabytes of ram, 256 is recommended
Disk Space – at least 750 megabytes free on the boot partition
According to our latest inventory, there are 40-50 PCs that fall below these minimum requirements. In the next several weeks, we will be doing a detailed inventory of systems and will notify each division of upgrades required in order to move forward with this migration.
As we move forward, we will post updates to the plan, including more specific dates for rollouts to various user groups, divisions, etc.
* If there is interest, we will hold a mini-training session for users to discuss changes you might notice as your systems is upgraded from Windows NT to Windows 2000.
