Mac OS 9 and Institute Macs
The Computer Systems Operations (CSO) Department is ready to start upgrading Institute Macs to version 9 of the Mac OS. We are not planning on doing a mass migration to this version, due to the fact that Mac X is so close to delivery. Version 9 does offer many enhancements to the previous versions and may eliminate some problems you may be having. You can view the enhancements at http://www.apple.com/macos. You can click on the Mac Os 9 Datasheet in Pdf format. So if you are happy with version 8.5 or higher there is no urgency or need to upgrade. If you are having problems, then we'd be happy to move you to the next version. All requests for upgrades should go to Macsupport@stsci.edu. The minimum requirements to be upgraded to Mac Os 9 are:

CSO has been using Mac Os 9 now for nearly three months on a myriad of systems including Mac clones. We have noticed improvements in both speed and reliability. Most of the major software vendors have sent out software updates to ensure that their products are compatible with the new version. Again submit your request to Macsupport@stsci.edu and someone will schedule a time to perform this upgrade.
