SAI SNAP proposal

SNAP stands for Supernova / Acceleration Probe projects which aims to solve "Dark Energy" mystery.

(Our proposal is not very specific to SNAP and could be applied to the all large scale survey projects.

We propose the following tasks:

1. Studying radial distributions of SNe in parent galaxies
SNAP's (claimed angular resolution is 0.1") could resolve "standard" (20 kpc) galaxy at z=1 and even at z=1.7 to obtain at least 3 bins histogram of radial distribution. The number of "resolved" galaxies should be proportional to z^2 with slight (at such z range) deviation due to cosmological effect. This is a "by product" result, no special requirements to observation process needed.

Expected results:

  • Greatly improving statistics and better association with possible progenitors
  • Evolution of distribution with z for various SN types.
  • Improvement of accuracy of cosmological parameters using more "homogenious" SN Ia. There are could be many speculations about "homogeneity", for example, one could assume, that SNe occured in external part of galaxies are more homogeniuos than in central parts, because of better mix of chemical abundance.
2. Direct distance measurements
Using EPM and SEAM (Expanding Photosphere Metod and Spectra-fitting Expanding Atmosphere Method) methods it's possible to obtain direct distances to the host galaxies. SNAP will provide spectea and light curves of type II supernovae.
3. SAI Supernovae Catalogue
We need to develop and implement new storage and catalog of Supernovae on top of it. This new Supernovae catalog should address following issues:
  • Expected number of SN discovered by SNAP exceeds the capability of current SN nomenclature scheme (26**2). New identification scheme should be developed.
  • Current known lists of Supernovae are not updated online. A big number of SN expected from large sky surveys requires technological work.
  • Various statistics are not available online, which makes research difficult and cumbersome.
  • There is no VO-compliant SN data archives, which is very desirable for cross-correllation (other type of objects, multiband observations) analysis.
4. Technology
We developed a new sky indexing scheme, see Q3C page for details, which could be used in pipeline procedure and data processing.
