SN Search from +50 to the Pole - Part 1.

SN Search from +50 to the Pole - Part 1.

Searching For Supernovae In Areas Normally Not Covered By Conventional Searches.

ABSTRACT:

The program Sunsrch.zip was presented to the I.S.N.on 1/9/95 to aid the prospective supernovae hunter in detecting extragalactic supernova events in a controlled area of from +50 degrees to the Pole. Here is a updated summary of that program.

The program (Part 1):

A study of the "Shapley-Ames Catalog of Bright Galaxies" indicate that there are approx. 130 galaxies of varying types brighter than 12.5m, which would put these galaxies within the realm of the amateur astronomer with a moderate-sized telescope.

Results of Part 1:

Twelve supernovae events (involving varying galaxy magnitude ranges and types) were found within a two year period in the declination bins of +50 - +90 degrees.(December, 1994 - December, 1996*). Three events (within the magnitude parameters of Part 1 of this program) were found by amateur astronomers, with the latter being shared with professionals (SNe 1995E, 1996bk, and 1996bu). In addition nine events (SNe 1995F, 1995J, 1995O, 1995X, 1995ag, 1996ah, 1996bn, 1996bv and 1996by) were found which were fainter than the limitations of this program.(thru SN1996cb)
(*In that period ~135 [+/-] additional sky-wide events have been catalogued.)

Part 2 of the program is now completed and adds an additional 172 galaxies fainter than magnitude 13.4 (there were two events that occured in that area during the past two years [SN 1995F and SN 1995J]), and brighter than magnitude 12.5.

Part 1 of the program includes: CHARTED SUPERNOVAE
A list of supernovae that have occured in the target area. This section describes supernovae (and statistics) that have been cataloged from declination +50 to +90.
THE GALAXIES
The galaxies to monitor, and statistics. A list of galaxies (and statistics) by declination brighter than approx.12.5m (Ames Catalog), (All references and data has been weaned from the RC3(3), utilizing the program Megastar(4).
OBTAINING CHARTS
How to procure charts for the various galaxies, suggestions. A method for obtaining visual/photographic comparison charts to be used in the project.
OVERVIEW OF SEARCH CRITERIA
An overview of search criteria, methods to conduct the program, and a negative report form. Distance Moduli of the galaxies and projected SN brightness appear here.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONS
In this section additional references and bibliography are supplied.
(Note: this project is intended as a project involving conscientious individuals....a knowledge of magnitude estimating at the telescope is a prerequisite. A minimum of a 12.5" telescope (visual) is urged ...plus a indeterminate amount of self-disciple, and "sticktoitivness".)
