Supernova Gallery

The purpose of the Bright Supernovae web pages is to provide a place where people can find reference images of Supernovae. It was designed as a quick reference so that amateur and professional astronomers can easily verify their observations and find out "what's up". At least that's how it started. Now I'm getting several hundred hits a day, and get showered with images when a new supernova is discovered

Occasionally, a really good images passes by. When this happens, I usually put a "wow" comment on the Latest changes page but otherwise, say nothing. For some time now I've been asked to create a "best of" page, where I index the best of the images I've gotten over the years.

sn2000_color2.jpg
This is a BVI color image of Supernova 2000do in NGC 6754. This is a rather poor-quality true color image due to the poor seeing at the YALO 1m on 4 Oct. The CCD also shows DC streaking in the left-hand (bottom here) amplifier. The image was made by combining BVI images (each a 100s exposure) to reproduce the colors. The supernova is the very blue object in the central spiral galaxy. Note the presence of a few very red stars. Credit: Nick Suntzeff. Used by permission.

This is a BVI color image of Supernova 2000cx in NGC 524. 2000cx is the blue star near the bottom of the image. This is a true color BVI image taken from the YALO 1m telescope on July 19, 2000. This galaxy is over 20 Million light years away. The full resolution image is rotated 90 degrees. Credit: Nick Suntzeff. Used by permission.

This is a false color image of Supernova 2000E and 1999el in NGC 6951. Two SN in the same galaxy! 1999el is part of the small "group" of stars to the left of the nucleus, and 2000E is in the bottom center of the image. Use this NOAO reference image and see if you can spot the difference. Credit: HЕkon Dahle's supernova page. Used by permission.
