Please, circulate it to anyone who might beinterested. We apologize if you will receive this email more than once. Alessandro Marconi & Andrzej Niedzielski ***********************************************************************************************FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT VLTI Summer School on: Active Galactic Nuclei at the highest angular resolution: theory and observations
August 27 - September 7, Torun, Poland This is the first announcement and call for applications for a VLTI summerschool on"Active Galactic Nuclei at the highest angular resolution: theory and observations"
which will be held in Torun, Poland from August 27 to September 7 2007. Applications are open at the school web page: http://www.vlti.org/ DEADLINE for applications is **** JUNE 25th, 2007 **** This school is intended for PhD students and young post-docs working in thefield of Active Galactic Nuclei and Supermassive Black Holes. The number of participants is restricted to 50 and we expect to fund fullliving and travel expenses of all PhD students and most young post-docs.Participants will be selected ensuring a broad coverage of institutes andcountries, and on motivation and domain of expertise. Non-europeannationals are encouraged to apply. SCHOOL THEME Active galactic nuclei are a quickly evolving and exciting field ofresearch at the forefront of modern astrophysics. The aim of this school isto present the most recent observational developments on AGNs andSupermassive Black Holes and to provide a description of these high angularresolution techniques with a special emphasis on observations with the VeryLarge Telescope Interferometer. The school is composed of two series of lectures. The first series willprovide and overview of AGN observations and theoretical models includingspecial lectures on AGN observations with adaptive optics andinterferometry, including existed and planned facilities like VLTI andALMA. The second series of lectures will introduce the basic concepts ofinterferometry, its applications at optical and near infrared wavelengthsand, with the aid of practical sessions, the students will learn totransform their ideas in VLTI observational proposals and will know how towork with VLTI interferometry data. CONFIRMED LECTURERS Clive Tadhunter (University of Sheffield, UK), "An introduction to AGNs andthe unified model" Brad Peterson (Ohio State University, USA), "The Central Black Hole and itsrelations with the host galaxy" Andrew King (University of Leicester, UK), "The accretion disk and the launching of jets and winds" Hagai Netzer (Tel-Aviv University, Israel)e, "The Broad and Narrow LineRegions" Moshe Elitzur (University of Kentucky, USA), "The obscuring torus" Sylvain Veilleux (University of Maryland, USA), "AGN host galaxies" Klaus Meisenheimer (Max-Planck-Institut fЭr Astronomie Heidelberg,
Germany), "VLTI: observations and future prospectsfor AGN studies" Roberto Maiolino (INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma), "ALMA: prospectsfor AGN studies" Ric Davies (Max-Planck-Institut fЭr Extraterrestrische Physik, Germany),
"Adaptive optics: observations and prospects forAGN studies" SCHOOL ORGANIZATION This school is organized by:INAF-Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri, Italy (Alessandro Marconi)Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland (Andrzej Niedzielsky). The programis one of the activities of the European Interferometric Initiative. It issupported by 15 EU member states, including new member states, and thusintegrates the entire European optical interferometry community.Project partners are: Centro de AstrofМsica da Universidade do Porto,
European Southern Observatory, Observatoire de Paris, Max Planck Institutefor Astronomy - Heidelberg, INAF-Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri.
