Abstract . Th e attempt s t o revea l magneti c fiel d i n whit e dwarf s o f cataclysmi c variable s (ex cep t polars ) hav e s o fa r yielde d n o positiv e result . Th e proble m i s complicate d b y th e fac t tha t th e luminosit y o f accretio n source s o f radiatio n i s well highe r tha n th e prope r luminosit y o f th e syste m components . T o avoi d thi s difficulty, i t i s propose d t o appl y t o precataclysmi c binaries . Th e firs t polarizatio n measuremen t result s whic h poin t t o th e absenc e o f noticeabl e magneti c field s i n whit e dwarf s o f precataclysmi c binarie s ar e reported . Th e propertie s o f singl e whit e dwarf s an d binar y syste m member s ar e compared . I t ha s bee n inferre d tha t th e magneti c fiel d ha s n o effect o n th e evolutio n o f singl e stars , whil e i n binar y system s it s influenc e show s u p throug h th e effect o n th e orbi t evolution .
