Photon/Particle Counting Image
Measurement System : PIAS-TI
The PIAS-TI is an extremely sensitive
image measurement device developed for imaging and quantification in ultimate
levels with an extremely small number of photons, electrons and charged
particles. In the case of light measurement, for example, the PIAS-TI can
detect individual photons to obtain an image at ultimate levels in darkness
that could not be observed even on ultra-high sensitivity video cameras.
The PIAS-TI is also capable of performing quantitative analysis by counting
the detected photons. In addition, selecting the appropriate detection
device realizes detection and imaging of electrons and charged particles.
Since the detection device is composed of a PSD (position sensitive detector)
and a MCP, counting measurement is not affected by the scan TV rate.

APPLICATION EXAMPLE

of an experiment in light interference at photon- counting level.

The purpose of the test is to show the interference properties
of a single photon. For this reason, the equipment is so organized that
only one photon at a time enters a double slit, thus preventing interference
between photons. The picture to the right clearly show interference.
CONFIGURATION OF EXPERIMENTAL SETUP
OPERATING PRINCIPAL
As the light quantity gradually decreases, it eventually
reaches the point where individual particles (photons) are observed with
a definite energy level. Thus, a change in the quantity of light means
the number of photons has changed.
At such a low light level (photon counting region), it is difficult to
detect light as an analog value. Instead, a method which counts photons
is more effective. An example of a light detector using this method is
a photon counter using a photomultiplier tube. The PIAS-TI is a measuring
system that makes use of the technology of the photon counter to detect
the input positions of individual photons or particles, and accumulate
them to create an image.
