footage.

Brain-machine interfaces promise to restore some independence to
paralyzed patients by re-routing movement-related signals from the
brain around damaged parts of the nervous system.
A new study in Nature demonstrates that a human who was paralyzed by
spinal injury could move a screen cursor and manipulate simple
robotic devices just by thinking about such actions. Implanted
electrodes in his motor cortex recorded neural activity when he
willed a movement, and the resulting neural signals were then
processed and translated into movement commands.
A second study, in monkeys, shows that brain-machine interfaces can
be optimized to operate at high speed which should greatly increase their
clinical potential.
This Nature Web Focus includes exclusive interviews with scientists
behind the research and FREE ACCESS footage of these incredible
experiments as they happened. An archive of papers that paved the way
for these recent advances is also included along with news, features
and commentary. Selected articles are FREE ACCESS.
