Хороший обзор по истории создания СТО (и ОТО) есть в "Теории относительности" Паули. К 1905 году уже и принцип относительности был сформулирован, и Лоренц-инвариантность УМ показана. Оставалось сделать "маленький" шаг :) И сделал его Эйнштейн, а не кто-либо другой.
